Battle and trade on sight with others.
 
Rarity of specific pokemon? How does multiplayer aspect impact gameplay? Are they just there to trade and battle?

Check Bulbapedia for specific pokemon's rarity. The MMO is based on Fire Red which is Generation 3 of the games. It will tell you how rare each pokemon is.

As for the multiplayer aspect, yes they are pretty much there just to trade and battle. The devs will likely implement tournaments for prizes at some stage.

And are shinys just found randomly? I still haven't found any
 
Only one colored shiny. Very rare like 1 out of 8000 something.

if your nidoking is the right nature and good IVs im jelly. :smokin nidoking was my favorite monster when i was younger.

i still havent encountered a single shiny and ive invested 140 hours.
