Dont they have to do that?
That's how news works. They gotta let everyone know whats going on in their town. They also gotta keep the public updated since the person(s) who did the crime are still at large.
"so guys, it's a very sad scene out here in _ road, _ Mississippi. family just got word that 6 year old, beautiful child Kingston, is dead. So, we will be reporting this story throughout the day, bringing you information. So stay tuned WAPT."

Dont they have to do that?
Very true. Same thing with Ritchie Valens (who also died with Holly). His mother and brother first found out from listening to their radio station. There's no law that says they have to inform next of kin first. They do it as a courtesy. It started back when Buddy Holly died in the plane crash. His wife found out because of a news report she saw on TV. There was some serious fallout from that.
