As compensation for losing Dave Robertson, the Yankees had the 30th pick in tonight’s draft and used it to take University of San Diego shortstop Kyle Holder. Baseball America had him ranked as the No. 38 prospect in this year’s draft, noting that his left-handed bat is a work in progress, but his glove is excellent. Shortstop is actually a fairly deep position in the lower levels of the Yankees’ system (Jorge Mateo, Tyler Wade, Abe Avelino, Angel Aguilar), but that’s a position where teams often stockpile a lot of depth, and MLB.com’s scouting video above notes that Holder is perhaps the best defensive player in this year’s class.
