So Unemployment Benefits Are Ending Next Week?

Yo how much does unemployment pay? This whole time I thought it was like $300 every 2 weeks

I was just talking to my friend about this because we know someone who had like 4 kids in 4 years.. as they are quite content living with the benfits

They should make everyone on unemployment work 2-4 days a week doing community service. Way to many people don't realize that your suppose to be job searching while collecting, not sitting on your behind.

Unemployment checks is no different than EBT or tax refunds. People will find ways to abuse and cheat the system.

Like The 7th Mile said, they are going to cut extension (EUC) on Dec 28th. This does not effect the UI from each state because EUC comes from the federal government. As far as the 99ers go, those days are def done. People were able to get 99 weeks because of the economy actually being REALLY bad during the height of the economic collapse. Most of the people that got 99 weeks were in the building industry (construction/plumbers/electricians/painters/etc). As you may already know, most of those people are in unions and did not want to jeopardize their pensions by taking other jobs that were in direct conflict with their unions. So they decided to stay on the bench and continue to collect until the hall had work for them. They could have elected to apply their skill set to other industries/careers, but because people are creatures of habit, they did not. Yes there are pockets of people "milking it" but for most people UI is just not enough. They are accustomed to living at certain income levels which the state, nor the federal government can afford to maintain them at.

A temporary cut to EUC already happened as a result of sequestration. Some states cut EUC completely this summer, some states cut a week out of the month, and some states took off a certain percentage. EUC returned to normal after sequestration.

One of the biggest misconceptions that people have about UI is that they think it is an entitlement program. It is actually an eligibility program. Additionally, your tax dollars do not pay for it. UI is paid for by business tax. This is one of the reasons why employers appeal UI decisions.

a lot of people also cake off unemployment by taking an under the table jobs so now you get paid twice

No one's caking off unemployment benefits unless they got a side hustle. That weekly amount is only a fraction of what you made working.

Seriuos queston..

How/when can you qualify for unemployment? If you legit can't find a job can you get unemployment? If you work as a contractor and your contract gets terminated early can you get unemployment?

It seems like there's a million different factors and people who actually should have it don't think they qualify.

You generally qualify based on a number of factors. You have to be fully or partially unemployed, be unemployed through no fault of your own, be physically and mentally able to work full time, be available for full time work, be actively seeking full time work (at least 3 a week over the course of 2 different days), and then to file your weekly claim.

The monetary determination is based on the last 4 quarters of wage records (not including the quarter you were laid off or fired/terminated).

Contractors and consultants are eligible.

No prob man. If you were a contractor, you def would have been eligible. Trust me someone with an employer number paid some type of tax for you somewhere along the way.

Even when the gov shut down, contractors were indeed eligible to file for UI.

Thanks for breaking that down. Especially about what funds UI.

I won't even lie. I milked the daylights out of unemployment and got the full 99 weeks of it during 09-11.

Got fired through no fault of my own and was getting the max amount offered in Cali. I applied for jobs but the only jobs that offered employment paid less then my prior job and less then my bi weekly unemployment checks so I didn't feel it was in my best interests to take those jobs.

Plus my old job appealed my unemployment and made me go to some stupid hearing where they presented their faulty argument and I presented documented info which supported my case which I won easily. After seeing how shady they were in appealing, I was kinda like screw them, I'm not rushing to find a job. If they didn't wanna pay my unemployment then they never should've fired to begin with. That's on them.

Plus I was getting the max financial aid at the time as well. **** was fun. I fly on a companion pass and had a solid hotel connect so I was going to Vegas damn near 3 times a month, New York to see family 5-6 times a year, Hawaii, Miami, and other places just because I was bored.

Used some of the money and put it towards side ventures and what have you so that id be good after my unemployment ended. I still haven't worked an actual job since my benifits ran out but I've been making a decent income off random odd jobs I do and ebay, and consignment stuff I do for heads around my way.

That said I have no real regrets for milking that thing to the max. I had a fun 2 years living decently as opposed to the alternative of settling for a job that would pay me less then what I was getting to have fun.

Aside from that, big corporations do dirt and get bail outs and what have you. I just got my small piece of the pie :pimp:

I'm looking forward to working again though hopefully sooner rather then later. I haven't worked an actual job since April 2009 so my work etiquette is probably rusty as hell lmao.

son im making $250 a week working 25 hours a week at my PT.

I had no idea you could make that much on unemployment. No wonder people be milking it like that.

I dnt think they are cutting off unemployment, they are cutting the EUC, the process after you exhaust your original term of unemployment...EUC is about 10 more weeks of payments after the initial 26 weeks.

My unemployment just ran out this week and I can definitely say I been milking. I haven't even been thinking about getting a job and my days are a lot like homie above, give or take a few things. I was scheduled to have my EUC start next week...it will but I won't get the full 10 weeks, only 2 or 3 because it stops December 28

Same here, but I'm in school. Finishing up undegrad next week, I need a job.

Hold up, you make 25hr and still get unemployment?
yeah im on call.

i know it sounds awesome but my job isn't steady.

i set up shows for a casino, they cant have shows every day.

it costs alot of money to book acts and also pay us, not to mention airfare and w/e else they request on their rider.

i got this job in may, it didnt start pickin up until october.

im lucky to get 4 days on a check thats 2 days a week, usually its fridays and saturdays

they try to get us 4 hours no matter what.

i get about 5 something after taxes, i get  damn near 200 taken out of my check.
mad.gif

my unemployment is 400 every 2 weeks, if i make a certain amount from my job then i dont get it.

i wish i could get that along with my paychecks.

Not really, and there's a cut off with unemployment, don't think there's one for welfare.

Welfare, as in TANF cash, there's a 60 month "lifetime" limit. You can use those months as needed (stagger them). But cannot exceed a total of 60 months in your lifetime. So no there is no "unlimited" welfare. However a parent may reach their 60 months, but their children haven't, (the months are only counted when you turn 18), thus the reason why you see human baby factories in the welfare system. No lifetime limits on food stamps (SNAP) though.
