The Official Photography Thread - Vol. 3

Birthday party for my lil cousin yesterday

Hi guys, I'm going to be buying some camera gear for a small photoshoot for a family get together around the holidays. I'm in need of help of finding a tripod. I know that the options are cheap, lightweight, and sturdy. From that bunch, I can choose two. Well, weight is of no priority to me as I do not plan do travel with it and climb mountains or what not. I don't exactly have a lot to spend so cheap and sturdy are my focus. I've been browsing Amazon and bh for tripods. There's so much to look at, it's all very overwhelming. I guess it also depends what I would want in a tripod but I wouldn't even know where to start. From my research, Manfrotto and Slik tripods come up a lot. As well, I read that it's best to not have a center column, but within my price budget, that seems non existent. Also, quick release seems to be a must, one thing that does confuse me is interchangeable heads, that and whether ball or pan/tilt heads are better. It would be nice to be able to pan if I ever decide to shoot a little video, but it seems a lot of my options come with ball heads already. If you think there's a really good tripod with a separate head combo that you know of, please feel free to share.

My setup - Canon t3i, tamron 17-50 af2.8, 430ex ii
Not sure if it makes a difference as well, but I'm 5' 11"

sorry, definitely not about to click through all those links...but the one consistent advice I've come across about tripods seems to be to buy the best one you can afford, while its possible this is a conspiracy straight from the tripod industry to get people to buy expensive tripods, the axiom "you get what you pay for" seems to apply. i don't know much about the different ball heads but i think tripods that have the ability to upgrade/fit different ball heads and/or universal mounting plates is good sign of acceptable quality...also it's good to have a good tripod just in case your photographic interests change and not have to buy another one... #goodluck!

really like this. you should post the original so we can see the comparison. cant say you saved it and not show us haha

Thanks, here you go.
* Back story - It was bright outside with clouds coming in and out and I was shooting in Manual which I regret doing at the time. The guy I had assisting was in his own world with the reflector and blinding the model. LOL.

* Edits - Crop of course, corrected the exposure (to my liking), color grading, cloning, stamping, dodging and burning, and a little bit of frequency separation. I try and make my edits look subtle and realistic, while still keeping the texture of the skin.

Hm, I guess what I'm really looking at as of right now are between the Manfrotto 294 vs the Slik 700dx. They appear to be very sturdy, somewhat heavy but reliable tripods. Any input, suggestions or other alternatives you guys recommend?

Edit - As well, what do you guys prefer and why? Ball head, pan/tilt, or pistol grip?

Came back from a trip to the Philippines. Still jet lagged, so I'll just post some snaps I took.

I have a Dolica Proline that I bought from Costco last year. Can't find it on their website anymore, but I think it's this one Amazon product ASIN B007HO50NO or that last one you posted for Amazon.

Except at Costco it's like $90. Anyway, solid tripod, highly recommend it. Good reviews of it over at PotN as well.

I have a T2i and the same lens and it works well.

Nikon D90

I still have my old D90. Don't even know what to do with it since it's pretty banged up and isn't worth selling. I pushed that camera as far as I can take it. That camera was the first to have HD video and everything. Almost miss carrying that thing around since my Mark 3 is so heavy and I baby it too much.
