there, cherry mx browns are great to type on.
This.

I had a similar issue last summer my keyboard and trackpad stopped working instead of dropping $300+ on a new bottom case/keyboard trackpad I got a bluetooth keyboard & mouse, and saved for a new macbook pro. Took me a few months to save up and when I got the new MCP I kinda missed using the bluetooth keyboard & mouse.

The $800 isnt just for the keyboard, I guarantee liquid spilled on the logic board and they'll need to replace that as well. If they dont replace it, the next time you go in for a repair, they'll see liquid on the logic board and say whatever issue you're having is because of that. The Apple Stores normally don't do partial repairs, meaning they wont just repair part of the problem. You might have better luck at an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

PM me though, I buy broken macs.

You can buy aftermarket parts and fix it yourself. Check this site to see if they have your part. They also have step by step instructions too. I think keyboard replacement parts are about $300, so much cheaper then the $800 that was quoted.
