Why medical bills are killing us.

We consume foods with little to no nutritional value. Medications and operations barely keep up alive.

They make more money treating illness rather than curing it. That's what I don't like.

It's where the morals of healthcare versus the sustainability of a business model meet.

I think healthcare has no business being a business.

I know this stance puts me at odds with people in this industry earning a living and all, but there are more people disgruntled with healthcare prices and services then there are beneficiaries of healthcare cost.

How do you cure hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and coronary artery disease? Lifestyle modifications, right? Now how many patients make the necessary modifications to get to better health?

I'll answer that for you. Not many. People are lazy. They want the easy way out. Take a pill and normalize your blood pressure or your high cholesterol or your blood sugar. That way you can continue to not exercise and keep eating like a slob.

The most common medical problems are fixed with lifestyle adjustments alone. Sadly, most don't want to put in the work necessary to better themselves.

I work at a prominient clinic in NYC and I deal with patients who constantly are killed for petty and rather unnecessary procedures. Knowledge is key like anything else in life.  Ask questions respectfully and remember you do have a say in your health and what it is done to you or for you.

Dont let doctors intimidate you because you will get got financially

i know ppl with FT jobs who dont have health insuracne because they CANT afford the company health insurace

i know ppl with health insurance who are in DEBT when they use their health insurace

It costs money to provide health care. Your MRI cannot be free of cost to you. Hospitals have to make money or they can't stay in business.
Now tell me why it's ok for hospitals to make MILIONS in PROFIT while bankrupting their "patients."

Healthcare should be an attempt to break even. Period.

It's hard to find good statistics on this, but there are plenty of hospitals operating in the red. And for instance, the academic hospitals operating in the black use that money to fund advances at the school and health system.

last thing my dad said to me when he dropped me off at school this semester was, "Don't get injured or catch any diseases." :smh:

haven't seen a doctor in almost 2 years.

Because corporate welfare and Crony capitalism rule dude!!!

watch what you say, or they'll call you a Commie!

I just find it appalling that 30 other countries have universal health care, but we being one of the richest nations don't...

QFT. and then the bureaucrats will call it "wasteful spending" and more "governments handouts". Well sorry for wanting to stay alive, my bad if thats too expensive for you. SMH

I am a doctor in Asia, finished my residency two years ago.

I was reading this thread, and just wanted to throw in my opinion,

and would appreciate it, if doctors and future doctors,

advocating for the current US health care system,

would take it into consideration.

1. People are complaining about inappropriately expensive medical bills,

saying that the money goes to the corporate health care providers and pharmaceutical companies.

Those are not the doctors.

So you should not take it personally.

2. You are making a good point by saying

that at the end of the day the hospitals have to make profit to stay competitive.

I agree with you.

However, you should also know that a good number of hospitals (and its medical staff) in countries

with more affordable health care systems make good money,

without putting a huge financial burden on its patients.

3. Now you might say that all this money is needed for future medical research

to develop better treatment options for patients.

Again, you may be right, as the US is at the forefront in research in most fields of medicine.

However, not all this money is going into research

and even if it was, I doubt it would justify

depriving the chance of good medical care off the people who cannot afford it.

I find it appalling that you want the awful care that comes with universal health care.

Americans would never stand for it if they got it. Imagine not being able to see a specialist for months. Imagine not being able to get that MRI you so desperately wanted and exaggerated your illness to get. Imagine not being able to get the best pharmacologic treatments available.

Going universal would be like taking away everyone's HDTVs and replacing them with standard def.

Come on man. Awful argument. You're smarter than that.

Imagine not being able to see a specialist, ever. Imagine not being able to get that MRI you so desperately wanted, ever. Imagine being able to get the best pharmacologic treatments available, ever. All because you can't afford it.

Not having universal is like taking away everyone's standard def tvs and replacing them with HDTVs for the fortunate and absolutely nothing for the less fortunate.

If you are wealthy I'm sure you will easily be able to find a way to speed up your waiting period. And I'm sure you will easily be able to see whatever specialist you want.

It's like a standard. And then a premium class.

You cannot justify the extreme income inequality this system creates. It literally makes families poor. One bad disease and that's it. You are done. That's even with people who have Heath insurance.

Some things can't just be straight for profit **** everyone else. Schools and healthcare.

just look at that chart. 2 percent spent education. :x

One of the perks for being in the military. I know military life has drawbacks but knowing i can go to the doctor/hospital for any reason and not pay a dime is ok with me

motherf'n PREACH.......probably one of the reasons im gonna stay in
Being a product of military parents I truly miss this. I would pay a higher premium if I could still use base hospitals. Almost conisdered joining for solely this reason. I miss that military life :smh:

Even if we (the US of A) had "universal" healthcare, I'd STILL make sure I have a private health care plan.

Spoke to a guy in Ireland and he said universal healthcare is great, BUT he still had his own private insurance with work because the minute he tells a doctor or hospital he has his own insurance he gets bumped to the head of the line for service . . .

I have no insurance got jumped at a bar by security guards back in august...almost left me blind in my left eye...long story short..my credit is ****** up and I have no money..in the process of suing the bar
