Nice info. I watched your TV in my travels last year. Subtitles for everything and I couldn't keep up with it fast enough lol. My English just carried me around perfectly. Great people the Belgians areThe north (Flanders) speaks Dutch as our native language. The south (Wallonia+Brussels) speaks French as their native language. The problem is that in Flanders, learning French is mandatory but in Wallonia, Dutch isn't taught in most places.
And while French is taught here, it's not used unless you venture down south so many people struggle at French regardless. I was fairly fluent in it but since I graduated highschool 4 years ago I'm pretty bad at it now as I haven't had to use French since then.
Many in our government doesn't even speak both languages. Translators are required for all parliament meetings. Our most prominent ministers speak both fluently but any time in parliament you'll either see half the seats with headphones on to listen to the translator or the speaker repeating his comment in both languages
