Knicks are #1 in defense with really no all defensive guys.

It's literally all effort against all these new offensive schemes you guys are talking about. We dont even switch like that.

because team defense is more important than individual defense. And y’all play the slowest pace in the league by far. Scrappy guys + limited possessions.

and even with that, Myrie still hung a 40 ball on you. Guys are better. It’s harder to defend

Team defense has always been more important. But once again, individually it's mostly effort which alot of players lack today since they are so offensive minded.

Again. NO ONE is downplaying individual defense but as a whole everyone needs to be on a swivel to defend because the floor is so spaced out

As the lakers who was harder to defend, Bam or olynyk in the finals. The game has changed man.

So again, how many great defensive teams are playing right now? :lol

If defense and rebounding really do win chips, as they have been for decades, then I strongly believe the Sixers or Heat would beat the Nets in a 7 game series.

The warriors didnt give a **** about rebounding.

They at least had Draymond or Bogut. Who were both huge. Those guys impact is far greater than anything defensively this Nets team can do.

Also their finals defensive rating was better than all the teams they beat in all 3 chips.

Kinda think we just need to accept that great, individual "i'm gonna go lock that guy down" defense - largely - doesn't exist anymore.

Style of play offensively, the rule changes defending on the perimeter, etc. ... Too many things have changed.

Individual defense is all about funneling dudes to where you've got help.

It don't matter that Kobe had Shaq, he was still asked to drop 25-30 while setting up the offense.

This whole team defense thing is another new term. Of course you play team defense. Dudes switched a lot back then too.

With your favorite player being who he is on defense, I don't think you wanna go down that road.

The #1 scoring wing option isn’t guarding the opposing teams best player, when they have another wing defender to throw on them. Kobe didn’t have to shoulder the same offensive scoring load, he had to when he didn’t play with Shaq. So a smart GM, surrounded him with other good wing defenders that could do what Kobe was doing in 99-01ish, when he was really locked in on that end. Same with Wade circa 06ish, or whatever else wings y’all wanna throw in there.

Debate if that is wrong? It’s simple. It’s like, ppl question why Kawhi isn’t guarding the other teams best player all game. Well you could put Paul George on that guy, or even Pat Bev or something. Doesn’t take away from their defensive abilities. The team concept and stamina, energy are more important.

Even Michael Jeffrey Jordan took a backseat to pippen on that end. It makes sense considering the offensive load.

And the warrirors played a switch heavy offense, that lead to 5 straight finals and 3 chips...with that guy “being who he is on defense”. Didn’t duck either. Played his role, and took the challenge. The way it should be.

what does this matter? If you don’t have both a great offense and defense you’re not winning.

Because ya'll keep ignoring the lack of effort nowadays. It's not as simple as the game has changed. The Lakers won last year because they had individuals putting in the effort.

it’s really this simple.

Haven't seen you post in a minute dude, hope all is well.

I couldn't disagree with this more though. Defense has gotten infinitely harder to play. The schemes on both offense and defense have gotten more complicated, there is less clearing out and watching one guy do everything, and the game is just so much faster and players have to cover so much more ground than ever.

Defense is evolving at like a 1.3 multiple... The offense is just at a 1.8 so it looks like defense is "easier"

Doing well, my brother!

I see you're point. NBA offensive schemes have improved over the years. But there's is still a lot to be said about players playing with effort. You don't even see the effort anymore. That's a huge reason why teams have "given up" playing any defense.

Who isn’t trying to play defense in the playoffs? The best team won with the best individual defender at the most crucial position for defense. Funnel everything to AD, that wasn’t KCP strapping up. He gives effort like role players are supposed to.

They also had two generational offensive talents.

I think the idea of a #1 wing scoring option also guarding the opposing teams best player, night in and night is simply an NBA myth of old.

That’s what this original convo was about.

Greg Buckner and Adrian Griffin as Mavs, even Johnnie Newman, used to literally lock dudes up, even Kobe and Vince, dudes would have 8 points going into the 4th then Nelson would pull them to go to his all offense lineups and they'd have like 30 in the 4th on Finley
