There really isn't anything we can do about how our government decides to handle this situation. All we can do is hope for the best, and hope that the people of Iran can handle this situation correctly, and not make the same mistakes they made 30 years ago. Although, I must say, John McCain's statements completely disgusted me.

Why? What did Senator McCain say?

He pretty much said we should do whatever we can to help the people of Iran, so they can over throw the regime, and replace it with something more beneficialto the US.

I haven't been following like I should.
But Its uplifting to see a society of people not sitting by idly while the gov't tries to pull a fast one. However,Revolution never comes withoutcasualties.
God (Allah) Bless all of the people trying to bring on change

After reading this thread, people are picking and choosing. 90% of the people in this thread will complain about the alleged Israelis "misuse oftreatment" towards against the Palestinians because it is against "human rights", but when you see a repressive Gov't in Iran, like Hamas, oppress their people they are saying "we should be more tough on Israel". Now that the Iranian Gov't true face is being shown worldwide, andpeople are dying in the streets because of the coercion by the Gov't controlled militias the US Gov't should be "hands off"? Bunch of $+!@#*!hypocrites.

Where are all the worlds Human Rights organizations on this? Pathetic.

The thing is, America would not get involved to help the people of Iran, they would get involved to protect their own interests in the country. What they wantis the best for America, not Iran.

I never said that. Obama doesn't want to get involved because he believes the current regime will blame America for all the bloodshed and violence, and useit as an excuse to use even more violence than they are using now. Ahmadinejad has already blamed America for the protests.

^Forgive me man, I didn't know most of what you said. I was speaking in reference to the US doing only what's best for the US. Still, and I have toagree with Fede DPT on this one, where the hell are human rights activists and organizations on this one? The ONLY thing I've seen on this scenario hascome out of Tehran, nowhere else in the world.

gotta agree.

israel gets all kind of hate. People act as if America and israel was creating this giant lie about the Irainian gov't. Well their own people are tired ofthe atrocities. Where are the human rights groups now?

on another note I understand why Obama is taking a more hands off approach. I don't love it, but with the history America has of influencing Iranianrule...he can't just go full head into this issue. I think he should show more support and comment much more on the role of democracy in this world. Getother democratic countries to voice this position as well. However you GOTTA BELIVE that Obama kinda egged this on. His speech was given so close to theIranian elections on purpose. He spoke at great length about womens rights. Women are a HUGE part of the protests in Iran.He should make some better comments.Obama needs to look past politics and play it a little less safe. You can't keep everyone an dtheir mother happy. Show a little more support. You cansheild it as promoting democracy, whatever. But speak up more! it will give the young men and women protesting hope,

oh and fade I really REALLY don't belive most republicans really care about the people of Iran and their plight. These people were so gung ho getting readyto bomb Iran and sanction the crap out of Iran and now they really care? Call me cynical but 80% of them are just playing politics.

The only reason we act like we care about the situation in Iran is OIL. We could care less about their aspirations, just the resources they stand upon.

Yeah, I'm sure. People said the same thing about when we invaded Iraq. I bought gas today for $2.93 today, where is the oil?

You know there is a problem with the Gov't when Iran in IMPORTING oil. What the hell do they ned to "import" oil for?

Not true^ we care about nukes and the stability of the middle east

but yeah, I get your point. We have our own reasons for caring

I think the CIA is in there sparking some of this unrest. What a perfect way to overthrow the government by sending there own people after him. Its funny causefrom what I heard the other guy that supposedly won aint no saint either.

At the end of the day though we have no real biz in this and getting involved would be a mistake especially with our thin armed forces and debt right now. Ifwe cared so much about people being free how we letting millions get murdered in africa? Ya i know iran got oil but still major double standard that theseclowns in the media won't bring up. Send UN peacekeepers if u gonna do something i dunnno.

i need some people's opinion. What would you think would have happened if Mohammad Khatami stayed in the race?

He had good intentions, but since the Mullahs are supreme leaders, he couldn't accomplish anything. If Iran stopped spending money on Hezbollah and nuclearweapons and started building oil refineries, their economic situation would get alot better..

The way the Republican Party is today, I really cant say. The Republican party is full of Neo-Cons and are so ready to go to war at the drop of a dime.

Thomas Jefferson said it the best...

I am for free commerce with all nations, political connection with none, and little or no diplomatic establishment. And I am not for linking ourselves by new treaties with the quarrels of Europe, entering that field of slaughter to preserve their balance, or joining in the confederacy of Kings to war against the principles of liberty.

Well put. Khatami's fault was his fear and decisions not to go against the regieme. As much he wanted to help the people, he did want to anger the Mullahsand the guardian council. If Khatami was put in Mousavi's place I doubt he would have gone so far as to call for a protest and reject the election results.

He has no policy making power. But he is used to distract the public from the failed domestic policies of the people who do have power - supreme leader and guardian council.

They protested his election because of what he represents - the conservative party agenda and the continuation of the hard-line policies. Everyone in Iran knows that he is not the one who makes decisions. But him being elected, means the same policies will be enacted. And the hardline agenda will proliferate further.
Here me out on this though.

If Ahmadinejad has no political power, then Mousavi would also have no political power. Therefore, if Mousavi was elected, there would have been no changereally. The clerics would still be in charge.

I do agree that he does not have full policy making power, but the President of Iran absolutely must have a good amount of impact on policy making, especiallyinternationally, to cause this sort of protest.

I'm kinda suprised this thread is so barren. This is such an interesting topic. I guess because we aren't getting credible new information because thejournalists are banned or are being arrested.

I was at a local protest today.

About 2,000 people.

So emotional. People are uniting all over the world to support the Iranian youth.

Such a beautiful thing.

i heard a kid from Iran on TV saying that the people believe they have the right to the same freedoms that the rest of the world has and they are sick of nothaving the rights that Americans and Europeans and other have.

Another kid said he is not afraid of dying anymore. He only fears the children growing up without freedom.

This is historic change we our witnessing and it's so important to support these causes against injustice and opressinon

Man, I feel you on that one. Being that she was an innocent bystander. I can't get that image out of my head. R.I.P. to Neda. I respect howthese revolutionaries are so brave. The fact that these Iranian women help out their fellow Iranian men by gathering rocks and starting human barricades getsmy respect. Your voice is heard.

I dunno man, nowhere in my post did i mention whether or not I believe what John McCain said; I was merely correcting a quote..........

But to answer your question, I don't believe what John McCain says. But at the same time I don't believe what any politician says

However having said that, I feel that we do need to step in and stop this madness. The people of Iran want the freedoms that we experience each and everyday, Idon't see why can't we step in and help. Now i know everybody will hop on and say 'look at what happened in Iraq' but I feel that this isactually a problem that is visible and in plain sight; i.e. no hidden/invisible weapons of mass destruction..... just a corrupt government/leadershipdestroying a nation.

I hate that America thinks that we should go out and police the world, but it breaks my heart when I see the masses of a nation being kicked around and pushedover by a corrupt leadership. Which is why we should go in and just help the defenseless folks over there.

exactly man. I feel the same way. I'm Iranian myself (living in Canada) and I feel like if the people alone can't solve this problem (which they mostlikely won't be able to do cuz the citizens just don't have the weaponry to handle the basij even though they have the numbers in masses), then I wouldgladly welcome foreign help to get rid of the bastard mullahs that ruined the country and made our family have to leave in the first place.

One thing that has made me really glad about this situation is that people are seeing that Iran is really not like any other middle eastern country. Iran'sfull of young, modern people that are really very much like most NTers here (you can probably see that in the videos, girls are smoking and know how to dressup, people wear fancy clothes and have their modern cell phones and everything), but they are stopped by the regime. When I was in Iran last time, I went to somany parties full of girls and liquor and everything, but you know what the gov't does about these? they find out you're partying, and they send you tojail/execution/whips and torture.
