LEWIS HAMILTON AND THIERRY HENRY GO HEAD-TO-HEAD AT LAUNCH OF REEBOK’S ZIGTECH

NEW  FOOTWEAR TECHNOLOGY IS AN ENERGY DRINK FOR YOUR FEET

Canton, MA (February 24, 2010) – Today in Barcelona,  Reebok Global Ambassadors Thierry Henry and Lewis Hamilton challenge each other to a physical duel at the launch of Reebok’s new training shoe - ZigTech.

The superstar pair go head-to-head and put their fitness to the test in a training contest with a twist. The ZigTech Showdown is a test of pure fitness and physical stamina and Henry and Hamilton have a secret weapon in Reebok’s new ZigTech footwear– the brand’s most technically advanced running and training shoe.

ZigTech technology reduces wear and tear in key leg muscles by up to 20% allowing you to train harder for longer. Simply put, it’s an energy drink for your feet.

Everything about Reebok’s ZigTech technology is designed to conserve and return energy to the athlete for a soft and springy ride. The one-of-a-kind ZigTech bottom unit features an innovative, lightweight foam that is engineered into a dramatic, geometric, zig-zag shape. This unique zig-shaped sole absorbs the impact of heel strike and sends a wave of energy along the length of the shoe propelling the athlete forward with each step.

On trying out the technology for himself Lewis Hamilton said, “The energy that I get from ZigTech is phenomenal. I’ve never known anything like it from a training shoe and now that I can train harder, faster and for longer, nothing and no one will be able to stop me, not even Thierry! It’s been great to meet him today, he’s a superstar and a nice guy, but that doesn’t mean that I’ll go easy on him when we’re up against each other.

MEDIA FACT SHEET

  • New Reebok ZigTech is the ultimate training shoe and reduces wear and tear of key leg muscles by up to 20%, allowing athletes to work harder for longer.
  • ZigTech demands less from your key leg muscles, thereby reducing wear and tear by up to 20% allowing you to train harder for longer.
  • ZigTech is lightweight, flexible and fuses energy return with the ultimate in cushioning.
  • The new ZigTech technology acts like an energy drink for your feet returning energy with every step.
  • The first thing you see when you look at the shoe is the unique geometry of the sole - the wave shape housing a one-of-a-kind functional purpose of energy return.
  • The zig-zag shaped sole works like a slinky. Just as a slinky passes energy through itself to propel it forward, ZigTech works the same way.
  • ZigTech transfers energy from one zig-zag to the next to create a wave of energy propelling you forward with every step, making training more efficient.
  • Energy return in other training shoes is returned simply up and down but ZigTech transfers the energy horizontally along the zig-zags so it is returned in the forefoot.
  • With Reebok ZigTech your shin muscles benefit from up to 20% less wear and tear as they are worked less. Shin splints are a very common injury in running and training. Reebok ZigTech allows hamstring muscles to work 6% less. Less muscle activation allows you to train longer and harder without the risk of wear and tear.

  • By training in Reebok ZigTech you can go longer, faster and recover more quickly.
  • Superstar athletes around the globe, including Lewis Hamilton, American Football brothers Peyton and Eli Manning, soccer stars Thierry Henry and Ryan Giggs and Ice Hockey ace Alexander Ovechkin, will now be able to train harder and longer thanks to this innovative new Reebok ZigTech technology.

MEDIA Q & A

BILL McINNIS – HEAD OF REEBOK ADVANCED INNOVATIONS

  1. WHAT IS THE REEBOK ZIGTECH TECHNOLOGY?
·         The ZigTech technology is all about energy.

·         ZigTech transfers energy from one zig-zag to the next to create a wave of energy propelling you forward with every step, making training more efficient.

·         It is the ultimate training shoe – it reduces wear and tear of key leg muscles by up to 20% allowing athletes to work harder for longer.
  1. HOW WAS IT DEVELOPED?

·         The idea came from energy return and its various iterations over the years.

·         The purest form of energy return would be from something like track spikes which tend to be very hard and the energy you put into them you get back.

·         The problem with track spikes is that they are not comfortable and therefore not suitable for running long distances.

·         On the other end of the spectrum you have soft shoes that are very comfortable but tend to not give you a very good energy return.

·         What we have essentially done is built a mechanical spring which is the ZigTech shape you see, but we have made it out of a soft material.

·         The spring provides the energy return; the soft material provides the comfort.

·         That combination is how we re-imagined energy.

·         There are several different phases during the development of any technology.

·         We usually go through 3-5 different rounds of design.

·         We build different prototypes to test and see what works and what does not work so if it does not work, we go back and redesign it.

·         With all the learning from our EasyTone technology, which was technology where you put more energy into the product to move, we wanted to go to the other end of the spectrum and build something that requires you to use less energy to move.

3.     WHAT INSPIRED THE CONCEPT?

·         One of the inspirations in the shoe that you can see in the final design was the slinky.

·         When you play with a slinky in your hand and you let the ring go back and forth, that is energy transfer.

·         The energy in the slinky moves back and forth along the length of the spring.  If you take the same slinky, spread it out and give it a shake on one end, that wave of energy you see is exactly what we’re trying to do with ZigTech.

·         We took that concept and instead of a hard slinky, we made it out of soft foam so that it has both comfort and the benefit of energy transfer.

4.      WHAT IS THE RESEARCH BEHIND THE TECHNOLOGY?

·         Research takes two different forms for us; the primary is wear-testing and the secondary is force-plate and EMG (electromyography) testing.

·         Our most reliable testing is observing thousands of miles on actual runners.

·         We have upwards of 20,000 miles on ZigTech wear-testing to date.

·         We break those 20,000 miles down into 300 mile increments.

·         We send a pair of ZigTech shoes out to a wear tester who will live with them and run with them for 300 miles.

·         The wear tester will tell us everything they like and dislike about the individual product from the first day they get it, half way through the study and then at the end of the testing period.

5.     WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ZIGTECH?

·         The benefits of ZigTech technology are less muscle activation which means less wear and tear on key leg muscles by up to 20%.

·         The benefit of energy transfer makes ZigTech like an energy drink for your feet.

·         Your muscles are working less for the same net amount of work that you are doing.

·         When we hook up EMG which is like an EKG (electrocardiogram) but for your individual muscles, what you see for the same speed and pace on the treadmill is that your muscles would be working less hard wearing ZigTech shoes versus your average running or training shoe.

·         When you’re wearing ZigTech your muscles are being worked less.

6.     HOW DO YOU MEASURE THESE BENEFITS?

·         EMG is very much like EKG, which if you have ever seen an electrocardiogram would be sort of a blip going across a screen showing your how your heart is beating.

·         Your heart gives off an electro impulse and an EKG measures that.

·         Your heart is technically a muscle and, much like your heart, your other muscles give off electrical feedback as well, so you can hook sensors to the skin that lies on top of these muscles and measure how those muscles fire.

·         In doing that, we can compare on the same athlete how his muscles fire wearing regular shoes versus how they fire when wearing ZigTech.

7.     WHAT SORT OF TESTING HAS BEEN CONDUCTED THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF ZIGTECH?

·         We do force-plate testing on almost all footwear products we produce to identify what forces show up.

·         This kind of testing helped us figure out that the shoe was as soft as we had intended it to be whilst still providing energy return and a stable sole.

·         It confirmed we had built a stable, soft running shoe which not an easy thing to create.

·         The wear-testing is the bulk of the testing, so those 300 mile wear-tests over 20,000 miles are vital to the final development of the product.

8.     WHAT TYPE OF CONSUMER DID YOU HAVE IN MIND WHEN CREATING AND DEVELOPING ZIGTECH?

·         We were aiming for the focused athlete - someone who trains a great deal.

·         This contrasts with EasyTone which was aimed at people who were simply walking or just starting to get back into shape and fitness - people who wanted that little extra benefit.

·         ZigTech is for people who are already working hard that want to be able to work longer, faster or harder – like athletes.

·         The idea was to lessen the wear and tear on their muscles so they could do more and ZigTech fits that consumer perfectly.

9.     IS THE ZIGTECH DESIGNED FOR A PARTICULAR TYPE OF TRAINING OR ACTIVITY?

·         The acid test for any type of training or running shoe is running.

·         This is where you get the highest forces generated on your muscles and joints.

·         Certainly over time when you do a 300 mile wear test somebody who has run 300 miles in a running or training shoe will be able to give you the best feedback on that product because they have really pushed it to its limits.

·         We design it first and foremost to be a very effective running shoe, but then we’ll test it for lateral sports and other training activities too.

·         The ZigTech is the ultimate training shoe as it helps reduce wear and tear by up to 20%.

10.     WHAT SETS ZIGTECH APART FROM OTHER TRAINING SHOES ON THE MARKET?

·         Traditional energy return is focused only on the vertical impact of the heel strike.

·         In contrast, ZigTech is a unique product in the market as it transfers energy horizontally along the zig-zags so the athlete gets that energy back in the forefoot.

·         With each foot strike, the unique geometric shape of the individual zig-zags serves to both absorb and cushion impact thus returning a multi-dimensional wave of energy throughout the entire foot.

11.     WHAT INSPIRES THE UNIQUE LOOK OF ZIGTECH AND THE STRIKING COLORWAYS?

·         The unique look of the ZigTech sole is inspired by the slinky.

·         If you take a slinky and stretch it out it looks very much like the bottom of the ZigTech.

·         The striking colorways draw attention to the one-of-a-kind ZigTech sole.

12.     HOW DOES ZIGTECH REDUCE STRESS ON MUSCLES?

·         ZigTech reduces stress on key leg muscles by making them work less hard.

·         Shins work up to 20% less and hamstring muscles work up to 6% less.

·         ZigTech is designed to be more efficient in a multitude of ways.

·         First and foremost is the energy management so it is like an energy drink for your feet demonstrating that you’re getting or keeping more energy from doing the same activity.

·         Everything else about the shoe, the fact that it is a stable, lightweight, and flexible shoe all contributes to more efficient running.

13.     AND WHY IS REDUCED STRESS ON MUSCLES IMPORTANT?

·         Reducing stress on muscles is important because overuse is really the biggest cause of injury that is out there, such as shin splints.

·         Most people’s injuries tend not to be catastrophic. One-time injuries, particularly in runners, tend to come about as a result of overuse.

·         So when you frequently stress one muscle over your other muscles, injuries become more likely.

·         The 20% less stress result we found on the shin was really the most telling for us.

·         For runners in particular, shin splints tend to be one of the first places that stress shows up in terms of overuse and overtraining.

·         More efficiency is a difficult thing to measure.  A more efficient shoe will cause less work for your muscles to go through the same movements.

·         By reducing the amount of activity or energy used by those muscles, we have identified the fact that we are reducing stress on muscles.

·         That is a strong benefit for athletes in reducing injury occurrences.

14.     WHAT KIND OF FEEDBACK HAVE YOU RECEIVED SO FAR ON ZIGTECH BY THE PEOPLE PARTICIPATING IN WEAR-TESTING?

·         The best feedback comes from long-term wear tests.

·         We ask the same questions as we ask about every shoe, for example – “how do you like the heel cushioning?
