considering both CPUs are around the same price id get the one with more L3 cache. not to mention the xeon does 8 threads. its $228.....best bang for buck processor.

get socket 1155 sandy bridge, thats the new platform. 1156 is old and not going to be supported any longer.

forgot to mention, the i5 also does not support hyperthreading
