It's common for people to go cheap on the room and go all out everywhere else.  Their mentality is all they're doing in the room is sleeping.  I know people like this and it makes sense though.

You don't necessarily have to get the base level, bottom trash room.  But the groups that go and "pitch in" on a room do this normally, to use their funds on everything else.

Because spending $250/night on a room and having no money left to do anything but eat at Subway is definitely a better way to go. The room is basically just a place to sleep for most people.
