A 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Honshu, Japan on Saturday morning, and a tsunami advisory has been issued for the Fukushima coast.

The earthquake was “felt from Hokkaido in the north all the way to Kyushu in the south,” reported Mark Willacy, the north Asia correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

An advisory has been issued for the Fukushima prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

“Marine threat is in place. Get out of the water and leave the coast immediately,” it said. “As the strong current will continue, do not get in the sea or approach coasts until the advisory is cleared.”

At the same time, it said “Though there may be slight sea-level change in coastal regions, no tsunami damage is expected.” The tsunami is estimated to be .2 to 1 meter high (up to about 3.2 feet).

The quake hit 10 kilometers deep (6.2 miles). The quake hit off the east coast of Honshu.

It is 7.3 magnitude on the Richter scale; the Japan scale has it at 6.8 magnitude.

The quake hit 202 miles east/southeast of Ishinomaki; 203 miles east of Namie; and 295 miles east/northeast of Tokyo, according to the U.S. Geological Service.

The time in Japan is 13 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time.

Story developing; check back for updates.

If they catch another Tsunami... :(

Hope the folk out there stay safe.

I think my geography teacher was referring to this in class today but he kind of rushed through it.

Didn't a mud slide kill like 45 people or something as well? Or was that a completely different incident unrelated to the quake?

Damn we're learning about Fukushima in my nuclear class and how that reactor meltdown was caused by a tsunami. Hopefully the same thing doesn't happen this time around

Damn, not too long ago Philippines was hit with a 7+ magnitude, now Japan? :{
Prayers go out to those in Japan, Stay safe Japan |I
