  • Police: Wreck involved three vehicles, including one going the wrong direction
NEW YORK (CNN) -- A three-vehicle crash north of New York killed eight people, including four children, state police said on Sunday.

A fifth child is being treated for injuries suffered in the crash near Pleasantville, about 30 miles north of New York. Police initially reported no survivors.

The crash happened when a minivan carrying the five children and one adult was heading the wrong way on a northbound lane of the Taconic State Parkway, police said. It crashed head-on into an SUV carrying three adults.

The minivan then careened into a third vehicle before rolling over and bursting into flames, state police said.

The two adults in the third vehicle were being treated for minor injuries, police said.

How do you drive in the wrong direction? Eyewitnesses said that the woman who caused the accident had plenty of time to pull over andavoid causing people to die this day. Terrible. RIP to everyone lost except the driver who caused it.

The driver that caused it had more than enough time to pull over. That's not a mistake, that's stupidity.

Happened to me before. Old %%% woman was coming towards me on a two-lane one-way. Thank God I was in the right lane. R.I.P. to the victims, though.

Forreal. Unless that driver had some severe condition or illness of the mental sort...in which case they should not even be on the road in thefirst place.

She still alive too. She has to live with the fact she murdered 8 PEOPLE. R.I.P Their loved ones lives are going to change drastically!

Yo I drove right near that today at like 2.

Also saw a ridiculous accident further south on a different highway: Some dude fell asleep at went full speed into a parked cop car. Ive never seen a cardestroyed like that.

the one who caused it is not alive... the mother/family of the 3 children who were her nieces that died lives on the same block as me.. probably like 8 housesaway across the street. i used to see them outside playing everyday. my mom said she saw a woman today walking around in a trance with her arms up in the airwith a man holding her, my neighbor told my mom what had happened.

that's sad. When it starts raining people suddenly forget how to drive.

Sorry for the bump but the news reported that she told her brother that was sick, he told her to pull over but she ignored him.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The driver responsible for a head-on collision that killed eight people -- including herself and four children -- was impaired by marijuana and had a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit, the Westchester County district attorney's office said.

Diane Schuler, 36, had a blood alcohol level of 0.19, according to the district attorney's office.

"My office, along with the New York State Police, will continue to investigate the facts and circumstances that led up to the collision causing the deaths, so that the public and the families of the victims can understand what led to this horrific crash," District Attorney Janet DiFiore said in a statement released Tuesday.

The head-on crash happened July 26 when a minivan driven by Schuler and carrying five children was heading the wrong way on a northbound lane of the Taconic State Parkway about 30 miles north of New York City, police said. The minivan crashed into an SUV carrying three adults.

Schuler and four of the children in the van died, as did the three people in the SUV. One child in the minivan survived and was hospitalized.

A third vehicle carrying two adults was also involved in the crash, state police said. Those two adults suffered minor injuries.
