So recently my laptop completely died on me and the laptop screen was broken and the family computer is out of comission and i'm in need of a way to getonline besides my iPhone. I have around $300 to spend cuz getting another computer was unexpected and the recession is killing me. Now I'm forced to bitethe bullet and cop a Netbook until I can save up enough dough for a iMac in 2-3 months. I just want to ask what are the advantages and disadvantages of anetbook and what are the differences from a normal laptop? All I need a computer for is to browse the web, iTunes, watch videos online, download video andpicture files and programs to do my homework.

Btw, I was looking to cop this: http://www.bestbuy.com/si...el%26%23174%3B+Atom%26%23153%3B+Processor+-+Midnight+Blue/9579235.p?id=1218127628216&skuId=9579235

P.S: windows xp or windows 7?

How bout u hold off and hit the library til u have money for somethin better. And why an iMac? is there a particular reason for that choice? Windows 7 is justas good if not better than Snow Leopard and cheaper.

netbook = smaller screen and keyboard

you'll still be able to do all your internet browsing, but I dunno about watching youtube and hulu HD videos.

and I'd get windows 7

I wouldn't recommend a netbook as your primary computer.

If it's in addition to a desktop, then it's a good buy, but the smaller screen, keyboard, weak speakers, and less power/space is not ideal for a maincomputer.

I have a bigger desktop that I have all my music, movies, tv, etc. on, then I have my netbook for school, vacations, browsing on the couch, etc.

well with the imac, he can put windows 7 on it and have the best of both worlds. but OP, i'd hold back on the imac for now. apple is having too manyproblems with their screens/units arriving DOA and so on. and as far as netbooks, i had a samsung NC10 and it was a pretty good couch PC. handled youtube okay, netflix great and browsing was good. plus it had an 8 hr battery life. u can also get a dell 11z (about 150 more tho, but more powerful)

There no possible way of using the library as a main computer. I'm a internet junkie and I need it with me 24/7

So let's say I want to watch a HD vid on YouTube, there would be no possible way to see it?

And those are the only differences between a laptop and netbook?

Btw, I have heard nothin but GREAT things about iMac and I trust Apple. Not to mention, the great programs and applications it comes with.

Also, what are the reasons for windows 7 being better? I can understand the upgrade but I was comfortable with xp

u must have not heard about the problems with these then. ive gone through 2 PCs (MBPs) with @@*@*@ optical drives that failed around 6-7 times EACH. terriiblespeakers, horrible screens..

btw, flash 10.1 helps on youtube HD, but it still lags/skips frames.

If you really want to go with a netbook, try to find one with Linux one it. I believe those are cheaper but I'm not too sure. If not go with W7.
IMO I would wait, make the sacrifice and save up for a better laptop or if you must go with the iMac, when the problem is fixed.

was gonna post it, but out of his price range.

I'm just gonna use this netbook as a bridge until I can cop a iMac or something. I just need something to hold me down til then.

All I care about is if it can play vids, browse the internet, use iTunes, and get my homework done. No need for other bells and whistles

if anyone can recommend me a good netbook OR give reviews on the netbooks they've used.

Btw, all the responses are appreciated!

And he can also install Snow Leopard on a pc and get best of both worlds. It's a two way street. But OP, honestly, save up and get a DellStudio or XPS. Those two models already have the new i7 processors for the same price as an Apple product w/ a Core II Duo.

in my personal experience i could never use a netbook for more than half an hour.

too slow and too small. keyboard and mousepad always too cramped.

i needed a smaller computer to bring around to campus and do work on but netbooks never quite did it for me.
so i went a different route.

thinkpad x61s for the win!

So I got an offer from a fellow NTer on this laptop:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12347218#ProductDetail

for a very good price (250). It's been used but he says not that much and the hard drive has not been cleaned. Would I be able to wipe off the hard driveand restore it to factory settings?

no knock on this nter, but sometimes with electronics You gotta take it carefully. Should I do this deal?

I wouldn't do it, but that's just me. If u lookin to buy a low budget laptop and still buy one later on then by all means do what u gottado. If not u can spend less, fix up the family desktop and save for a better laptop. Acer's aren't the best brand and havin an AMD limits u in someaspects.

u know well that it's not as straight forward to install snow leopard on a pc as it is to install windows on a mac. you have to be at the very leastsomewhat tech savvy to pull it off. compared to creating a partition and installing windows 7 on it along side the already installed snow leopard.

with that said, i'd personally stay with a PC. the only decent mac is the 27" i7, and u can get a better PC for cheaper (especially if u build ityourself) with expandability. im officially done with mac from here on out.

Yea u right, it does take some tech saaviness

But U right about that as far as the i7. They are rollin out w/ the new line gradually and soon Core II Duo's will be the low grade processor. I wannaupgrade my processor to a mobile i5 since there really isn't a difference between them and the i7 but I don't think my mobo's chipset could handleall the juice like Bishop so I'm fittin to invest in a Dell XPS later on.
