Afraid to visit other countries?

I used to really love the idea of traveling the world etc. As a single guy I went to a lot of countries by myself or with a guy friend and had no thoughts or even remote concerns of safety. The closest to worried was going from San Diego to Rosarito, Mexico in those shady cabs. Even that was just shady seeming cuz of the no lights drive.

Having a good looking gf now, I realize I'm afraid to go a lot of places. India, Brazil, Africa, Middle East, etc. I feel like even as a guy I can't protect her/us if there are 7 guys there just waiting for the right situation. It sucks I feel this way about India since I am India (my gf isn't). I'd love to visit India but it seems risky to take a fair, good looking girl there.

How you NTers with girls feel about traveling?

I dont have a girl but i have a phobia to leave the USA. Im supposed to be going to cuba next summer and i want to go but i cant see myself getting on a plane to go there

There are certain aspects of traveling that can be frightening, but no way in hell I'd ever let that fear stop me from going where I want to go. Where is the fear even coming from?

there's so much to see and experience in the world, but people can't help the way they feel. if you're scared to travel, it's cool. that's just another open seat on a plane for me.

I actually had this conversation at work a couple days ago. I mentioned the not speaking English and a couple of my coworkers mentioned as long as you speak English most countries you can find someone who speaks English. Esp. in Asia

How you NTers with girls feel about traveling?

Do you still have family there? If so maybe you should go by yourself and get aquainted with the dos and don'ts of the country. Learn Where to go and where not to go, build relationships with your family so that way you feel at home. Then at a later time you and your girl go there and you can be confident that you arent putting her or yourself in danger by going to certain places.

You can try the same strategy for other countries, minus the family ofcourse. But once you familiarize yourself with the place you will feel more comfortable.

Im afraid of traveling to certain parts of Africa and the Middle East. There are some parts in the world where Americans just don't belong. Other than that i'm game to travel anywhere as long as im going with someone fluent in the language, knows the culture, and could help me around with my experience while im out there.

OP, I know plenty of Euro, Canadien, and Aussie women who have traveled/backpacked throughout India EXTENSIVELY, alone at that. You have nothing to worry about.

I would say certain places in syria, somalia, some parts of southern philipines, some parts of southern thailand due to ethnic seperatists/islamic insurgency. It just seems a bit sketchy to travel there due to all the civil unrest.

ok, thanks for clarifying, but you do realize you listed two countries in civil war/genocide in Syria and Somalia which has no centralized government? 

Thailand is safe.

the Philippines are safe. 

use commonsense and don't go in anyone's backyard/hood looking for trouble just about anywhere on this earth you will be fine.

Agreed on southern Philippines. As a Filipino American I cannot imagine going down south to Mindanao, I rather stay in Manila, Cebu, and Boracay. As for other countries I would love to backpack across Europe but I am a little scared cause of my brown skin and safety precautions. Sometimes you gotta shrug and go for it and enjoy.

I guess my mind is just running wild scenarios cuz of these recent India and Brazil bus rapes and murders. I know if you go to some unsafe area that something can happen, but what makes me hesitate is that these situations happened in 'safe' populated areas. America has a different sort of violence, less premeditated generally.

Actually, I don't even live in the US. My gf and I have lived in Korea for the past 3 years. There isn't a single unsafe part of this country. Girls can walk around by themselves at 3 am anywhere and nothing is going to happen.

I visited India last year to see some family. It didn't feel unsafe to visit as a guy. I just saw the way Indian people look at foreigners (especially foreign fair skinned women) and it seems like you have to constantly be on guard. It's not going to stop me/us from visiting places I just didn't realize this part of having a gf. I've never had a serious gf before so I've always considered vacations as care-free, wild, etc.
