AJ XI IE Light Orewood Brown October 6, 2022

Well, there wasn’t a consensus way to do lows at the time, seeing as how the 11 was the first AJ to get a low since the 2. Only starting with the 13 was there a low every year, and even then, some of the designs strayed away from or switched up the design elements of the mids.

Thanks for dropping that gem 💎 on his head!!!! I bet he/she born after 98🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lol the funny thing is I did do some simple googling right after I posted that, but google said IE stands for International Edition… That got me wondering why they needed to change the design for MJ to play internationally. Is patent leather illegal in some countries or something? Lol

Yeah I also knew about the low top 11s that look way more like the originals, that’s why I was confused. I think the question still stands though why they needed to change the design instead of just treating it like any other low top J
Yeah, it doesn't stand for "International Edition." For years, no one at the brand even seemed to know what it meant. Then one day, this clown named Gentry Humphrey who was head of Jordan Brand did an interview where he said that's what it stood for (or he may have said "international exclusive," which it obviously was not), but it was pretty obvious by other evidence that he just made that up so he could give an answer. The "IE" was originally only printed on the white pair's box, never on the black/red colorway's box. There was debate for years about what it all meant, until someone pretty solidly figured out it was part of the color code for the white pair but the letters "IE" were accidentally printed on some box labels right next to "AIR JORDAN LOW" rather than on the line below that lists the colors. Voila, it became known as the XI low IE.

As for your question about why they look different to the regular XIs, Tinker Hatfield (the designer) explained he wanted to make a version that was more summer friendly:

“I felt like [patent leather] was contrary to the summer feel,” Hatfield said. “The shoe didn’t need to feel so stiff and heavy. For the summer, I wanted something that was lighter and easier to wear.

“I changed the pattern to put breathability in the right spots. Then, when you look at the different compositions, you want to fill in the gaps with something that could be decorative, like elephant print. I thought about trying textures and stitching. The mesh said something about summer, and the stitching we did really artfully."

Here's an old NT thread that discussed the whole IE name thing, and where the explanation seems logical and solid:

I knoooow. Just frustrating when they only run these sales for like 15 minutes at weird hours, with no notification. It's just all luck with when you happen to decide to look at their site.
Thus the reason I created a thread for site discounts. I'm pretty much on my phone throughout the whole day. I check Twitter and NT to see if there's any info I can catch to post.
