I thought this would be a good place for NT'ers to bounce new business ideas and ventures off each other and have everybody collaborate and help each otheranalyze opportunities. Criticism is welcome if it's constructive, and don't be afraid to share your ideas. Ideas are a dime a dozen, but the actualimplementation is what matters.

Current things running through my head:

1) An IMDB like database where instead of movies it will be financial services firms, instead of actors and cast there will be employees of the company likeanalysts, investment advisors, etc... The main problem this will solve is the lack of transparency in the financial services industry and it will also allowcompanies to market themselves. Employees can post their bios, career history, research work, academic experience, track record, etc.. The revenue model wouldbe free for the users but it will charge companies a small fee like $20/quarter or something and of course advertisement revenues

2) Local organic compost: Pickup compost, garden refuse, food waste, etc... at people's doorstep and then turn that into organic compost and resell it aslocal organic compost. I think in certain cities and communities, people would be willing to pay a premium price for this product.

Anyways share your thoughts and opinions, I know we got some smart people here maybe we can get some good businesses started.

1) How would you initialize the database ? Nobody is going to pay to be the first, and no consumers will use it unless it's comprehensive.... Catch 22.Likely, you'de run it at a loss for a few years before it went profitable.

2) I don't doubt people would want to use organic soil, but I think you'll find it difficult to sell it at a profit. Also, you've got to reallyjump through some hoops to be legitimately local organic, this would get to the point of verifying what people are putting in their garbage.

Also, you're going to have to find a mass delivery for this, so thats some pretty hefty capital. Maybe you should focus on commerical selling to nurseriesand growers ? They would be able to transport their own, and you could offer a discount for pickups. Also, where would you put tons of organic soil ?

1) I'm an accounting major and I'm not sure how this would work. Is there a lack of transparency with the financial firms?

2) Well, I don't think it would work if you sell it back to the same people but as organic compost in general where it could be sold in retail stores. Theonly problem is people might not want to keep their banana peels to leave it out for the compost guys.

Nice thread. I have so many ideas. But 1 is a Tabletap brewery.

It would be a brewpub where you could sit down and eat lunch or dinner, or come have a drink at the bar. At night it would be exclusively a bar.
- Tables would have beer taps on them that customers could use themselves.
- Taps would have a seasonal brew, and maybe 2 other in house brews.
- Drinks would be measured by the ounce, kind of like a gas meter.
- Food would be better than you avg "bar food"
- People would come for the experience.
- In house brews would be distributed locally/and available for take out in jugs.

The idea is in the early stages.... Thoughts?

OP i like your 2nd idea. Someone from my school supposedly started some type of recycling business like this. I heard its prerry successful. Dan whats itcalled?

This is a good idea, put there are a few possible problems.

1) Check your local laws regarding people serving themselves in a bar. It seems unlikely that this would be legal.
2) How can you ensure that the 1 minor at a table of 15 adults isn't drinking ?
3) Read up on the success rates of restaurants.
4) If the brew was available at the bar across the street, why would they come to your organization ?

It's a pretty good idea. I suspect that it could work, but a restaurant needs more than a good gimmick (no offense, but there have been better gimmicksthat have failed, what would you do different?)

I'm not being a downer, I'm just trying to ask questions that people may not think of themselves.

Duerr I like the Feedback, im the 1st one to shoot down peoples business ideas, so I can handle the questions.

1) I have considered the serving yourself laws. It would be investigated 1st. And i have thought about having a limit per customer. Like I said, early stages.

2) The minor issue would be dealt with the same way they would be at a family restaurant. People would show ID's up front, and waiters could monitorrespectfully throughout the meal.

3)Providence is an up and coming city, and I think a restaurant like this could do well here. Although there are a lot of bars, and a few brewpubs. None ofthem have anything special that makes me want to go.

4) The brew wouldn't be available across the street. Sorry if I didn't clarify. It would be an in house brew distributed in small quantities to grocerystores, and maybe a few local liquor stores.

And I agree about the success rate of gimmich businesses. Thats why I wouldn't just up and start this business without research.
I would make sure to target a specific demographic, and cater to them specifically. Theme nights at the bar would be a definate. Like karoke, happy hours etc.I think it could be a pretty fun spot.

For all these ideas I haven't really looked at the logistics yet, with that being said:

1) Exactly, for this idea to really gain traction, the quality of the content has too be worthwhile. It's all about the network effects. I was thinking Iwould start a pilot project in my local city (Victoria, BC, Canada), and first have all the investment firms like (Raymond James, Edward Jones, CannacordCapital, etc...) send in their employees information. Gradually I would branch out to the accountants, banks, pension funds, etc. I would add in like a messageboard section, an events page, rating system and whatnot for each person. Definitely I would understand it would run at a loss for a few years. Do you have anysuggestions?

2) Maybe you could pay people to bring their refuse to a central location? In my city the dumping fees are pretty high, and this would cut down on thecollection costs and solve a large part of the verification problem. Yeah I think this would have to be distributed through traditional retail channels, butmaybe this could be sold directly to landscaping companies, universities, the municipality, etc. as well.

I really appreciate your honest feedback and criticism, thanks!

Hey Skip thanks for the questions, keep it up

1) I think the general public doesn't have access to information in a way that they can easily and readily compare company information, statistics, andhistory to make a fully informed decision into who they want to manage their assets. The industry, in my experience, is centered around word of mouth, reputation, and advertising and I just think people would find value in a website where they can get a lot of information in one stop rather than visiting 20different websites and looking through the "our company" section.

2) I'm from BC, Canada, so the communities and cities as a whole tend to very environmentally conscious and people are a big supporter of "local"businesses. I think localization is a trend that is starting to pick up quite a bit of steam especially with the current economic situation.

I got a good idea:

Crip/Blood reversible jackets.

Think about it: you're out of town, and don't know which neighborhood bangs which set.

Thats when you bust that jacket inside out, and BAM.... now you down for the cause...

Dont steal this idea, because it is mine.

Hey Maxi, a few of my friends who went on exchange to Europe mentioned that this exists in some capacity over there and that it is quite asuccess. Would your tabletap thing look something like this:

http://www.tabletap.com/

Also since Rhode Island is fairly close to New York, maybe you could implement a more wall street feel to it. Like have the prices of beers and drinks bedisplayed on a stock ticker like board, and when their are drink specials this could cause like "a run on the bar" or something. Another idea couldbe that each table would have their "score" in number of drinks and/or dollar value they've consumed for their visit to be displayed on ascoreboard. This would promote a relatively competitive and fun drinking environment, but this might go against state laws regarding binge drinkingencouragement.

JC08 I like the wall st feel. Thats interesting.

I have some sketches, the tap would look smaller, and it would probably run from kegs in a lower level, so you wouldn't actually see the beer.

Damn Europeans, got me for my idea already. LOL.

Good thread.

On a simple note....acouple of us need to come together and make a GIF archive. With all the GIFs, GIF makers and marketing potential on NT we could definitelytake the top spot in that extremely niche market.
