Everytime I think about it, I am still amazed Titanic was able to be tops at the box office overall. I mean, sure the movie was bound to be a blockbuster hit, but damn, it was 3 hours long. That's 1/3 less showings than any other movie. So that means, it was probably shown in practically every movie theater, and each of those theaters probably had more than 1 screening room, and every showing must have been packed for 2 weeks straight. Still astonishing. I would have thought that one of the Star Wars prequels would have beat it.
i remember when titanic came out. it had a perfect formula for making money:
1. lots of hype
2. was a chick flick (appealed to teenagers)
3. was an action/disaster flick (appealed to men/kids)
4. was a drama/romance flick (appealed to older folks)
5. best special FX at the time
6. 15 oscar nonimations
7. came out at christmas time, no real competition
