DETROIT (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co. is preparing to wind down the Mercury line, created in 1939 by Edsel Ford, after sales plunged 74 percent since 2000, said two people familiar with the plan.

The automaker's top executives are preparing a proposal to kill Mercury to be presented to directors in July, said the people, who asked not to be identified revealing internal discussions. Mercury, losing two of four models next year, will be starved of products and promotion, the people said.

CEO Alan Mulally emphasized the automaker's namesake brand as he revived the only major U.S. automaker to avoid bankruptcy. The timing of Mercury's demise depends on how fast executives can persuade the brand's dealers, who also sell Lincoln models, to close or merge with Ford showrooms, they said.

"Mercury is a forgotten brand," said John Wolkonowicz, an auto analyst with IHS Global Insight. "Many Americans probably already think it has been discontinued. Mercury was too similar to Ford from the very beginning."

Mulally also is unloading Ford's European luxury brands, after the automaker failed to achieve a goal to have them generate one-third of automotive profits. Ford in March agreed to sell Volvo to China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Co. It sold off Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin in the last three years.

I was hoping to see another reincarnation of the Marauder before they went under, oh well.

We know you hate American cars, but in this case mercurys were no longer between ford and Lincoln, they just were fords with more chrome, and little else so killing it off made sense, but RIP to the brand anyway

Damn thats a lot of jobless people you'll have in that time period.

American cars suck - Period.

if they would've had a better management and better cars they wouldn't have this situation and reputation they have now. Nowadays you have to be a total American car fan boy to buy one.

I know some of these cars have the "more bang for you buck" - thanks, but I'll pass.

their employers suck, grow up.
if they open up a store that sells useless crap down the block and they go under, will you have a candle light vigil for the jobs lost?

what amazes me even more is.. how the hell did Mercury stay in business THIS LONG??? They literally had 1 good car in their line-up, and that joint is almost half a century old

it's called social responsibility. People get upset when American car companies go out of business, but over time its better globally.stop being so close minded.

I understand, I could give two #%%%+ about the CEO's and CFO's and everyone that drove the company into the ground. I feel sorry for the people working in the factories building the cars trying to make a living. They are now without a job.

Like I said, you wouldnt be talking that mess if it was you or one of your parents that just became jobless.

First of all, good business decision by Ford if this is official.

Secondly, what is all this talk about job losses? Ford is on a roll right now so they will probably just turn all the former Mercury productions into Ford productions instead. Won't be hard to do that since Mercurys are just re-badged Fords really.

Finally, workers should know better than to stay working for a employer that has a history of making poor decisions. Word to GM... I kid...

Mercury hadn't been a viable FoMoCo brand in years. It had Buick's geezer reputation, but worse - everything in the Mercury stable could be bought under the Ford marque for less cash, or under the Lincoln mark for more prestige. The Marauder filled a niche left void by the 96 Impala SS, but (relatively) cheap bad boy American muscle is abundant nowadays. Not sure if Ford will be shedding jobs as a result of this decision, dealer consolidation/closure will certainly mean some job loss. Hoping it's nothing too serious and everyone lands on their feet.
