I made a thread about my trip this past summer to different parts of China about a month or so back. I just got back yesterday from a short two week trip to Tokyo and Hong Kong with family and wanted to share some pics. This is my third time in Japan, the last time being five years ago, and I've lost count of how many times I've been to Hong Kong, my favorite city.
A lot of the pictures are going to be about food.

First, Tokyo.

The first thing I see getting off the 10 hour flight to Narita International Airport. A sign of the bizarre yet to come.

165273_10150362229700147_860730146_16420207_3499277_n.jpg

Waiting for the bus to take us to Shinjuku, one of the twenty-three wards in Tokyo and home of the world's busiest train station. The ride from Narita into Tokyo took about two hours.

First thing we did after arriving was to go find this famous ramen shop in Ikkebukuro. The place sat about twenty people and the line of people waiting extended down the block. Waiting in line for 45 minutes in brick weather right after getting off a plane is no fun.

165723_10150362230825147_860730146_16420238_1815539_n.jpg

All bitter resentment vanished at the sight and smell of this. I've been to Ippudo and Momofuku Noodle Bar in NY, Katana-Ya in SF, and a ton of ramen shops all over Japan and Asia (one of my favorite foods) and this is the best I've ever had. Thick cuts of bbq pork, perfectly-timed eggs, meaty and thick broth, springy noodles... simply perfection.

On our first full day, we went to an onsen, hot spring, in Odaiba, an artificial island in Tokyo Bay. If you've never been to an onsen, it's a must try. One of the most relaxing things you can do and a great way to spend half a day especially when it's as cold as it was. People uncomfortable with being naked around others might want to skip this.

They also have vending machines that have hot canned drinks such as coffee. One observation I made is that soda wasn't that prevalent. Vending machines mostly sold tea, coffee, juice, or energy drinks.

The train system in Japan is one of the most efficient in the world. It's also one of the most confusing ones I've ever seen. It didn't help that we were using the Shinjuku station which is the busiest and largest in Japan.

Just want to say that I hate you because I still can't eat solid foods as a result of wisdom teeth surgery, and this makes my stomach cry.

Awesome pics though homie, looks like it was a great trip. I'll probably go to Korea before Japan, but I want to try those public baths, they've always looked really relaxing

Japan
Shopping - Harajuku for the younger crowd. You might want to go just to check out the people decked out in cosplay. This is where you'll find sneakers and streetwear. Bape, Stussy, Neighborhood, Supreme, Head Porter, etc. There are also higher end brands with stores out here. Takashimaya is a huge shopping mall in Shinjuku that houses a lot of brands and restaurants too. I think Ginza and Shibuya have shopping areas too.

Food - The ramen shop I posted about is called Mutekiya and it's in Ikkebukuro. Other places I tried included CoCo's Curry House, Hitsumabushi Nagoya Bincho (the unagi place), Mos Burger, Wired Cafe 360 (there are a bunch of Wired Cafe's in Tokyo, I just went to the one in Harajuku)... There's food everywhere and you can't really go wrong in Tokyo.

We didn't do much sightseeing in Tokyo. Honestly, there isn't very much to see. If you want to sight-see, I suggest taking a train out of the city and going to see Mt. Fuji. Maybe make that side-trip a couple days since you can stay at a hot spring and REALLY get the full Japanese experience (I'm talking sleeping on a tatami mat, Japanese breakfasts in your room, and natural hot springs in the mountain.) If you don't want to get out of the city, go to the onsen in Odaiba. Definitely worth spending half a day there.

Night life - I didn't get a chance to get out this time around but Roppongi is where you want to be.

Hong Kong

Shopping - Causeway Bay, Central, Mong Kok, Tsim Tsa Tsui all have places to shop. Causeway Bay has places like APC, I.T. (they're everywhere in HK but the best one I've ever been to is in Causeway Bay, right next to the Agnes B. shop), Juice, D-Mop, Beams, etc. Central has the IFC building and mall which is one of the nicest malls I've ever been in. Mong Kok has the infamous sneaker street and also the Langham Place shopping mall.

Food - Man, great restaurants everywhere. I don't even know where to begin recommending. Go to Din Tai Fung in Tsim Tsa Tsui for xiao long bao. It has a Michelin star. If you're feeling extra baller, go to Lung King Heen and have dim sum there. Three Michelin star dim sum wat?! The other places I don't even really know by name but I definitely recommend you try these things while in HK: won ton noodles, fish ball noodles, steamed milk dessert, HK-style egg sandwiches, street food such as curry fish balls.

You can take the MTR to go see the Giant Buddha statue on Lantau Island. It's pretty cool taking the gondola up the mountain. You can take a day trip and go to Macau where there's another entirely unique culture (and food
laugh.gif
) plus you can gamble there. Go to Central and take the tram up to Victoria Peak.

Night life - Oh man. Go to Lan Kwai Fong in Central. It's the bar district and all the foreigners and locals alike go there and just party every weekend. It's pretty incredible. Then there's Wan Chai with a healthy bar scene too. By experiencing the HK night life, you'll really understand just how international the city is.
