Any Big Brothers in here

So I signed up with Big Brothers, I cleared all the background stuff & I'm waiting to be matched w/ a little. I got some info on a potential kid, dude is already traveling down the wrong road. If anybody has ever done any kind of mentoring can you give me any tips or pointers. Or just how you felt about the experience in general

your doing a good thing man. Live up to that GURU title.

It's something i'll eventually do once i'm out of grad school. Def. need patience in this kind of position. You also have to have a good theory of mind in relation to your little brother. It's easy to say something is right or wrong but when trying to be a positive role model to someone younger you have to realize that they are living in different circumstances.

I don't wanna talk your head off...you'll know what to do.

Whatever good lessons you've learned in your life, you now get the honor of passing them along to another.

I made a lot of mistakes in my teenage yrs but luckily it was short lived and I had my folks and siblings to see me through it. I too figured I'll get around to it when I have the time but the longer we wait the worse it gets

Don't let mentoring become dictation to the child's life. The child will have to make the choices in life regardless. But be there for him when he makes the wrong ones with positive reinforcement. Always ask, "So what did you learn from that experience?" So you know they're keeping a cognitive mindset on the choices they make.

I know not to come in and preach to the kid like im holier than thou. but when I read the little info provided, I was doing the same thing this kid was doing & is probably a reason why they want to pair us up. It just shocked me how young he was but I know 1st hand from being a "troubled youth" what sinks in & what doesn't

I was seriously considering signing up about a year ago but I never went thru wiith the application process... I'm not sure why either.
