Any NTers work in the Sports Business field?

I work in sports radio. I like it, but I work crappy hours. There is always some kind of NFL or NBA game on all the big holidays, plus they play on the weekends so you get to enjoy that six day work week. It can be irritating at times but its also fun. I enjoy my job.

If anyone has any radio or sports broadcasting questions, let me know. Ive been in the business for over 4 years now.
I would one get in that field? the talking on the radio or in front of the camera part, not behind the scenes

I've always wanted to get into something like that.
I thought about being a Sports Agent, but you need to do tons of networking, and get with the right people.

Kudos to you PMAC for having that goal in mind.
That's what makes me so confident that I can make this work.

i saw that espn story about Worldwide Wes.  still not sure what he does exactly but he seems to be very influential and well connected.  maybe some of you guys can read about where he started out.
I've read all about him.

In an attempt to stimulate this thread, here are a few links that particularly interest me. I'm gonna try to create something along the lines of these businesses.

My boy is going doing this. Needless to say its really hard. You need A LOT of connections if you want to make that big money.

Basically, you got to start off small. Ask your high school coach/gym teacher, see if they can recommend you to someone/where, and keep on building onto it. But thats all i know, im sure other people probably have more effective ways

A lot of it is definitely going to come through "who you know". I'm in my last year of college and currently have a media relations internship with the Sacramento River Cats (Oakland A's AAA affiliate) It's a lot of fun and I have met some cool people (Coco Crisp, Rickey Henderson) But the scheduling is gruesome, especially for an intern

I graduated recently with a degree in Sports Management.

Since I entered school and upon leaving, I'm no longer interested in the business side or big money. I just wana do something I enjoy and I know the business side isn't it.. I've targeted college athletic departments and possibly trying to enter coaching now. NCAA Market is a great site to use if anyone is interested.

Good luck Pmac

Its not easy at all. In the sports industry you literally start at the bottom until you've paid your dues then you'll begin to make moves.

For the people interested in the Broadcast Journalism part of the industry, you need to go to a 4 year accredited university/college and its recommended that by your sophomore year you make an attempt to get on a campus radio/television station. You guys aren't going to be pros overnight. It takes time. My alma mater has the #1 Communications program in the nation and from what I saw on Orange TV and heard on the radio, there's a reason why everyone doesn't make it. Internships and practicing your craft will get your foot in the door.

Best friend graduated with a sports management degree and is going to start interning in the winter AA or AAA I forget which one (waiting until winter because his wife just had their first child). Smart kid who knows a lot of people, so sky is the limit for him. We're both huge followers of minor league baseball and prospects/scouts of each team so he's bounced ideas to me before. Just be prepared for a lot of work and hours.

It was something I was/still am interested in but I chose to go the law enforcement route

I'm def. thinking about getting into the business side of sports. Sports is my love.

Question: I'm going into my Fr. year of college, what do ya think is the best way to get into the business world?

Sports 'business' can become so far away from actual sports, that you might as well be working in an office for any other business. that's the problem a lot of people encounter when that field doesn't exactly show the promise they initially thought it would back in HS. (which kinda happened with me)

Seriously, id look at other career paths as well if thats what you love.  The sports industry is very grueling and there isnt a lot of time to "love" sports when youre in the field.  Im not telling you to not go into the field, but keep your options open.

Same here.

For me though it wasnt that it didnt show the promise I initially thought.  I was just lured away from the business because I truly wasnt passionate about it.  The long hours, the types of people who work there, the pay... its tough.

It seems like fun, but minor league baseball is a tough job.
