My 3,4th time surfing yesterday, finally was able to stand up for a few seconds.
Questions:

1. how do you know if the waves are surfable? the waves were fairly big yesterday.. however sometimes i would be tricked.. seeing this huge wave coming behind me, and i start paddling, only to let a weak wave roll under me

2. it has helped me to paddle an extra second more after you feel that the wave has caught the board.. is this necessary? i always fall right off if i try standing right when i feel the board lift.. however i tried paddling a bit more and i was able to stand for a bit

3. how long did it take you to be able to stand successfully? and when you do, is it so easy that you are able to stand regularly on smaller waves as well?

i'm still practicing with a longboard btw. kinda disappointing how hard it is to be able to stand and catch a wave..
a lot of times i could catch the wave, feel the board lift but when i try to stand, i lose my balance
