Career hunt is getting old.. nobody's hiring. Got a tip on checking out teaching English overseas.. was wondering if anyone has done it, what kind ofexperiences you have had and what kind of certifications are necessary? Also any other general information on the matter... seems like it'd be a good wayto travel a bit but I'm not sure I'm qualified to do it.

Pretty sure somebody here used to do this in Japan but i can't remember who...mpapa maybe?

You probably need to know the native language of where you are teaching, right?

im currently teaching in Japan. It's a really easy job, but really boring.

You really need no experience at all. All you need is a bachelor's degree, and your set.
i guess it would be good to know some grammar terms, cuz they might give you a grammar test.
but even that is pretty simple.

you dont need to know the country's language to teach ESL (kinda double edge sword)
I'd recommend it, but hey, i know people who have been here 10+ years and cant speak any japanese.

NOPE...

In fact, for most of the English teaching programs in Asia, they prefer you don't speak the Native tongue. This way, when communicating with the students, you'll be forced to teach in English and nothing else. They don't want you to "cheat", I suppose.

The JET program is one of the many things I want to do. DLed their application and everything my "first" senior year in college.

Yea, true. But its a VERY unrealistic goal. especially the higher you get up. HS is impractically impossible to teach using just English (depending on thelevel, of course)
But of course, most, if not all, of the time you teach with a native Japanese teacher, who is expected to translate things the students dont know.
