Well, as most already know here, I'm about to graduate in May of this year and currently work in one of Washington DC's lowest/poorest hospitals. For those in the DMV know where I am talking about, but the name of the hospital is called "United Medical Center" A.K.A Greater Southeast hospital. I work in the Dietary department and I am going through massive hell with people in there. I honestly think they are intimidated on how I carry myself. I speak proper, don't use profanity, and obviously on the verge of Getting my under grad degree. I work with a bunch of ghetto/uncivilized people. It's frustrating because it seems like to be "accepted" in that environment you have to be a thug, pump dope, speak like you never read a book in their lives, and other things that fall under the ignorant category. It seems like my views and morals are looked down upon/shut down. I will admit that I'm kind if the quiet type and don't really say to much, but I also think that plays a big role on why people do that. My question is, are anyone in this situation or have been in this situation? If you have, how did you handle the situation?

I can understand what you are trying to say.

Just get your work done man. Don't belittle folks or talk down to/at them. Be a human. Don't be greater than the job.

You don't have to be friends with them. Be respectful, go home, enjoy your friends away from the job.

Have they been directly rude to you though? Give me a for instance?

Hostile? :lol If you crying now with min wage cats causing stress...you definitely won't survive in corporate dog eat dog deadline world where your villains carry themselves just like you say you do and you have to be smart just to see them coming . Grow some balls...and get thicker skin.

Well, I come off very polite 95% of the time and people take it as if i'am taking down to them, which isn't even the case.. Like I said, ignorance is what people accept..smh.

See, this is my stance. A lot of time, when people use the following cards:
"She think she is cute"
"He thinks he knows everything"

I think to a certain degree, people actually believe these things about the people they are saying these things about. Not to take your side, but maybe these people don't feel comfortable around you because of a difference in ambition and maybe they are looking for a reason to dislike you.

So anything you say/do might come off as talking down.

Just watch how you talk to them. Yes, you might be polite but you don't know how they are inferring it.

I don't know man, it is tough to be nice to certain folks but you have to do it either way.

Overall my office environment is great (low stress, flexible, joking around) BUT there's tension between "degreed" and "non-degreed" people, because most of the younger professionals with degrees quickly jump over the veterans without a formal education. This is due to both company policy/values and individual competencies, which IMO isn't always fair but it is what it is.

I've noticed that some of my coworkers get threatened/defensive very quickly, so although I consider myself confident and driven, I put extra effort to massage "office relationships" and try to accommodate the folks that are sensitive on the subject. Not really a "hate" thing but sometimes I feel bad because when I do well some people act negatively towards me

My friend works as a dietary aide at a rehabilitation center. The environment is similar there too.

OP is naive and probably does come off condescending

I don't think one would have to deal with ratchet individuals in a "dog eat dog deadline world". I think dude has a problem with individuals who think that he's better than them due to his refined nature. What you're saying has nothing to do with OP's situation.

OP just go to work and be out, stay courteous at all times and if there's a serious problem (constant harrassment, preventing work from getting done, etc) talk to your manager.

Not that srs
