I'm looking into buying an electric guitar.

I've done some research, but I'm still on the fence on what do buy.

What's a good guitar for a beginner? I'm not into heavy rock, more like John Mayer's style...

Thanks in advance.

btw I'm thinking of a Ephopine LP-100 or SX STL Ash.

SX.

I was always wary of their products, but for the money, you seriously can't beat them. A simple combo amp would suffice in a small apartment or room.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably get the SX.

anyone else?

whats your budget?i'd say go with the lp-100 but thats just my opinion.

same here

can anyone explain the difference in strats, like the mexican version/american version/ ect.

the american strat is the most expensive? about how much?

From experience Ibanez is the best way to go for beginners

are you sure its something you want to do?

just asking because i know of toooooo many people who have a whole setup that has gone untouched since the first month they bought it

I've been teaching myself for awhile, know a lot of people in bands, and am finally getting the hang of it now, i can pretty easily switch between chords, besides F (still don't know how to $!+%%## play it), so now i've gotta start getting into theory and scales so i can start writing stuff that'sless generic...

And Crank, i've got a Mexican Strat, don't use it much obviously cuz i'm not playing shows, but my buddy used it onstage and it sounded fine, definitely worth the price for a starting guitar, i like mine alot...I'm actually thinking of copping a Danelectro though, they are

and cheap as %%+$...

I'd honestly recommend getting a fairly cheap acoustic to start off with though because an electric IMO is pointless to have unless you arerecording/playing shows...

whatever you do, get a good reviewed amp that plays cleans nicely if you're going John Mayer.

barre chords are stupid btw. I hate them so much

The Mexican and American strat are like night and day. The American strat has better overall build quality...better wood, better parts, better pick-ups. Thesuperiority in tone and feel make the American worth buying. My American gets more play-time than my Les Paul does.

did you spend over 1k on your american strat?

Well if you can, try to pick up a Japan crafted Strat, exceeds quality of an American and half the price. Get ready for a muscial adventure fam! Been playingfor several years and always learning something new and aren't you excited for JM's new album?

JM new material..

I just copped an acoustic a month ago.. Really havent had time to practice.. Right now i can only switch between 2 chords smoothly..

I heard learning the chords is the hardest part. Is that true?

You can get a Fender Highway One Strat for about $700, and it's American made.

I just started learning, the guitar I got is an Epiphone AJ-100.

It has a real nice sound for a beginner's guitar, better than the Yamaha my friend has.

can anyone school me on AMPS and distortion pedals to give it that "grunge" sound?

I've got an affinity series telecaster. I have been playing for a few months and I hope in a couple of years I can play in a band. Crank, you might want tolook at Line 6 amps and also Rat Proco Distortion Pedal. I've heard good things about those two. I currently have a boss distortion pedal which gets thejob done for where I am I right now as far as skill. It's a lot of fun coming up with riffs and learning songs. I highly suggest checking outguitarjamz.com's youtube channel. SO many great videos, lessons, tips and tricks. Marty is a genius. Check it out ASAP if you want to learn some new stuff.

As far as American vs. Mexican, American has some better materials but the Mexican is the best kind of guitar you can get for the price so go for it.

I started off with electric and don't own an acoustic but I sometimes play my friend's. A lot of people say you should start acoustic but it wasn'tthe sound I was going for so I started electric. I do agree that you would probably be better at picking, and finger strength if you start acoustic, but Idon't really care at the moment.

Which bands are you guys looking at for influence or style?

Glad to see there are some other NTers who are interested. If any of us decide to play gigs, we should try to check each other out.

You don't really need to look at pedals, solid state combo amps usually have built in effect nowadays.

And don't ever buy that spider line 6... They suck, really. Instead check out Vox AD series amps.

I agree...there are plenty of decent, inexpensive amps with built-in effects.

If you are a beginner, there's no need to buy an American...the Mexican is a very good guitar at that pricepoint. My best advice for beginners is to go toGuitar Center and play around with all the gear and get the guitar you're comfortable with.

I have a Deluxe that I got on a semi-steal price, paid just under $1k for it.

yea Im not so sure about the amps giving it the effect, Ill rather cop a pedal
