Long story short: new in town, Met this dude who was talkin about playin spades at his spot this weekend. Said his sister and her friend play a lot, and theyll teach me. But I wanna go in with some sorta knowledge.

I looked online at the basics and some online playin sites etc, but wanted to know if anyone had any 1st hand exp?

Ive never played before and if money gets involved I aint tryin to get bamboozled

Main thing to remember.
If you see that your partner won the hand, don't beat him/her
and don't renege. that's how friendships end

Try playing online to get the hang of it, or play Hearts on your computer, it's the same thing just opposite concept I think.

lol, maaaan, whenever I chill with black people we always play spades. I've never played for money, but it's fun as hell. Make sure you don't undercut your partner and it's better to claim lower books than your maximum!!

The lead card ( card that plays first), everything after it must match the suit unless you do not have the same card. If this happen then throw a spade if you opponent has the high, if it is your teammate you can throw out any other type of card. There is a lot of aspect to this game though that you have to play to find out. Like leading your teammate if you know he does not have a suit (beside spades) that you have.

Man, this brings back memories. Haven't played since high school. From what I remember, 2s are counted as spades and I played with jokers, but some people don't. Main thing is, if your partner is winning the book, DO NOT throw a spade unless thats all you got. Remember what people are throwing and if they are out of a specific suite, remember it and use it to your advantage.

I was raised playing Spades, if you didn't know how to play and got on the table then my grandma was cussing you out.

I'm sure they'll teach you the basics, but always remember these things:

1. When bidding, always take into account the amount of spades you have and the lowest amount of cards you have of another suit. If you have 7 spades and 1 heart, you should at LEAST be betting a 4, not even counting the quality of your other cards.

2. Pay attention to when your partner throws out a really high card of a certain suit when it's not their turn. If your partner is responding to a hearts play and throws out a queen for "no reason" then it may mean that they're out of hearts and they're cutting. Be sure to feed them hearts if you win a book and you lead out.

3. Pay attention to the card your partner throws. You don't want to cut higher than them just because you weren't paying attention, and you don't want to cut their King or something just because you thought someone else threw it. That will get you kicked off the table.

Other stuff is more common sense. If you have a King of Spades and you don't know who has the Ace, don't throw it until the Ace shows itself. Stuff like that you'll pick up fast though. Good luck OP.

Online is the way to go with any card game.

Growing up in a black family, in a black neighborhood, going to black schools and churches, I've played my fair share of spades.

Get books early! If you got Aces and Kings, play them joints and then you'll be ahead of the game.

Obviously, don't reneg. Make sure you play the game the right way.

Bidding is an art form, I haven't figured it out. Intimate knowledge of your partner helps. I would ask before the game starts, "Are you going to bid aggresively or conservatively"

Just have fun. People get serious about spades, but don't worry about that bs. Just have a good time and whatever happens happens.

Know what you're playing:

Joker/Joker/Deuce/Deuce
Joker/Joker/Deuce/Ace
Ace High

10 sandbags sets you back 100 points. (Always play bags. Underbidding is a no-no)
"10 gets you 2" means if you bid 10 you get 200 points.
If you and your partner have good hands, remember you can only bid 8 or 10. You can't go 9.
Keep track of what has been played.  Do not renege. Ever.
When in doubt, play to win.
$20/person minimum.

Try too save money for the end.. what i mean is, Remember what your partner and everyone has, Money = spades Now, say every spade was played..say ur last card is a 2 of spades..even know its the lowest spade, its gonna still get you that book because every other spade has been played....i learned in jail, and i played about 50 games a day...for soups or items or tobacco...wow i want to play right now... so much fun, bustin people in they heads....also play casino...IMO casinos the best card game

Bidding is easy....Any ACE is a point, Ace king queen of spades i would count as books, maybe even 10. Also Id even count kings and just get them out early...If someones cutting early just hold on to that suit til the end

One of the best card games ever. Youll learn to love it.
just play smart
You can get some practice online like yahoo games
