AT&T iPhone Question

So I broke my screen on my Edge iPhone (old one). My contract ends in December and I want to switch to a Blackberry (possibly on another service). I picked upanother Edge iPhone and I'm wondering if I could just switch sims into the new one and get service or if I'd still have to extend my contract. Iswitched the sim card and connected it to iTunes but I don't know if I should activate it. Would I be able to use this new phone without signing another2-year contract?

Not something I can do at 2 am. I'm asking now so I could just activate it (and be able to use it tomorrow) if I wouldn't be forced into a 2-yearcontract by doing so.

I THINK, you'll be able to work with it, but won't be able to update it, it might brick it.
