Here is a story from Engadget in regards to this new speaker system...

If you've been bragging about your all-encompassing 7.2 surround-sound system to of your friends, prepare for a mighty dose of humble pie. Audi has hand-crafted what it calls the Sound Concept, an in-car sound system so excessive it should be able to cause your soft, fleshy bits to pulsate in new and exciting ways. There are five tweeters scattered across the dash and the doors, five woofers (four in the doors and a monster in the back), and then a whopping 52 mid-range speakers encircling the entire enclosure, creating a package that's not likely to show up in the options catalog anytime soon. All these have been wedged into the interior of a Q7 SUV in the interests of Wave Field Synthesis, minimizing a user's ability to hear specific speakers -- and blowing Audyssey's paltry 11-speaker DSX system right out of the water.

If you have the money you can already go to a custom shop and have them do this to your car but I don't know why you would.

Yeah. I really see no point in having that many speakers in a car. There seriously is no point. I just found it pretty amazing. Imagine the wattage for this things.

I don't think it would sound bad...considering it's probably going to be made by Bose.

This immediately made me think of some the old McIntosh designs....

It would really suck if you got into an accident and they had to repair your car. Imagine replacing 60 speakers? Lol.

There's so much fail in there

Manufacturers do this because folks think

more= better

in car audio

less= more.

You get imaging issues, time delay issues if you want to get technical... more money, more power.. etc etc... once you hear a car with a great front stage, you'd understand.

Rear speakers take alot away from your imaging. First there is the time delay issue but more importantly, your sound is supposed to "appear" as though the singer is on the dash. This means that the majority of sound needs to come from in front of you. If you have a bunch of sound coming from behind you, it adds NOTHING and only takes away from the goal. It makes it that much harder to achieve.

Stock speaker locations are not there for audiophiles. If  auto manufacturers ever get into SQ competitions then you won't need to replace a single speaker and you can be happy with the factory locations. It makes no sense to accept that you need to replace the factory speaker because it's crappy but believe the location it was placed in is superior in some way.

Audi's optional Bang & Olufsen already cost 6K and I don't this setup would sound better than the B&O system.

Cars are not home theaters. I never understood surround sound in a car. That's just too much. A good set of separates in the front and back with the right placement and one nice sub ported into the cabin is all you need. You can blow the doors off of any system with simplicity.

There's no such thing as "surround sound" for music anyway

99% of music is 2 channel, not 5.1
