Austin became the first city in Texas to pass a resolution supporting marriage equality Thursday.

The City Council voted unanimously for the resolution a month after Equality Texas circulated a petition  urging them to do so.

“The tide is changing in America and I hope that by joining this loud chorus, our city can play a significant role in helping set us on a path to full marriage equality in our country in my lifetime,” Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell said Thursday.

Michael Graupmann applauded  the move at CultureMap Austin. ” It makes you proud to be an Austinite all over again, though, eh? Halle-frickin’-lujah, y’all,” he wrote.

But, KUT  cautioned  that the resolution does not have the force of law: “The practical implications of the resolution are unlikely to be great. In 2005, Texas voters approved an amendment to the state constitution, banning same sex marriage and civil unions. Travis County was the only county in the state where a majority did not support the amendment.”

Hey it may not mean much legal wise but it is a step in the right direction. Especially since Texas is such a red state.
