I'm new to credit altogether, I just use my debit and thats about it, so forgive my ignorance and bear with me.
Here's my dilemma

I was about to apply for a college credit card through my bank Wachovia.
At the bottom of the application they ask for a close relative
When I approached my sister (the best candidate) she said she would not cosign due to a bad experience in the past
and that I should check out the APR, which she then said was bad, then she suggested that I should do some research on secured cards

I only really want the card for a few quick purchases that I plan to pay back with my refund check
But my refund wont be here for a while and my sister's suggestion seems like it will take long and by the time I finish doing that my check will havealready come

Any Suggestions as to how I should approach this situation?

I guess I should have posted pics of %!*$$+% in spandex then I would have gotten some replies huh?

You should post this again tomorrow all the people who could help you out are asleep.

Be patient dude, we're not a customer service hotline.
And I don't know about now, times may have change, but when I applied a year ago almost anyone with no credit history could get an American Express Blue.

Dude I work in a bank so here is what's up. Typically college cc's have higher apr than other unsecured cc's because students are higher risk tothe bank. They make much lower income and more irresponsible compared to those who better credit and are therefore less likely to pay back their comittments. When it comes to a first time cc, you are gonna have to bite the bullet on a higher apr. This can be avoided by simply paying off what you use within thestatement cycle. In today's economy, even college cc's are hard to get approved. Your other option on building credit is either a secured cc or adepartment store cc. In regards to department store cc's, the downside is that you can only use the card in that store and apr's can start in theupwards of 20% or more. Good luck and advice I always give to college kids is to not use the card unless you can pay if off that same month or if it's asevere emergency.

My refund check will be here within the next month so I should have a 0 balance by the end of September if i do choose to get a card.
And after that I don't think I'll be using it much, if ever.
I just really need the money right now for other expenses (books, clothes, etc.) and no one I know is willing or able to loan the amount I want.
So I figured I'd take it into my own hands and get a card.

I hate to say this, but... if you're planning to make a purchase with money that you don't have yet you're asking for trouble. Iwould HIGHLY suggest that you use financial discipline and wait until next month when you have the money in hand to make the purchase. You would do that, orget a part time job for a month to earn the extra money. Now is the time to be creative rather than taking the easy route and borrowing the money. Creategood financial habits now and you won't be like most of the country and go paycheck to paycheck every week.
