True freshman Matt Barkley has been named USC's starting quarterback, the team announced Thursday.

It is not known whether Barkley will start beyond the Trojans' Sept. 5 opener against San Jose State.

Barkley split time with junior Aaron Corp, who has not gone through a full practice since cracking his fibula Aug. 11, running the No. 1 offense at practiceWednesday.

Barkley, who graduated early from high school so he could participate in spring ball, has received the most quality time in practice this month. Corp waschosen as the Trojans' replacement for Mark Sanchez out of spring ball but was hurt in USC's second practice of camp.

That's a hell of a way to lose your spot though. Wonder if Corp will stay.

Not really, when he came in he probably figured he could get the nod after JDB left. Couldn't have expected the rise of Corp and Especially Barkley, whowas still in HS.

That's true and all but he probably thought he was the better QB of them all, and he KNEW he would get a fair shot to compete for the startingjob at USC. Add in the fact that he was a package w/ Damian Williams.

I was shocked when I heard that...though it HAD to be wrong...but nope....


If the Ohio State D does not put pressure on this kid, they are darn right foolish.... its a game that Barkley will be looked at and they'll say, well hesjust a freshman, or he will be the big man on campus and the new stud QB at USC if he can get a win at the Shoe at night.

i talked to Mitch in the beginning of March, dude was pretty confident he would be the starting QB. This all happened over spring ball/the summer. Immediatelyafter last season, Mitch was the #1 QB on the depth chart.
