Bartending school

So I'm thinking about going to bartending school and it seems pretty easy to get a certification.  The pay seems pretty good for a part time job.  I did some research and found a place that takes 2 weeks and about $400 for classes.  
My question is, for you bartenders out there, how hard is it to get into bartending?  How long did it take for you to become a good bartender?  What's it like?  Is it easy to get a job?

i did it when i was 18.. it was cool, learned a lot.. i've bartended a couple times since but not much.

I've looked into taking a class as well. If I have the money/time at some point over the summer, I figure it's definitely worth/cool to have the certification.

Does anyone know of any Bartending Schools in NY that I should look into? Thanks.

you have no experience besides going to a b.s 2 week course, who do you think will hire you ?

best way to move to a bartending position is by working your way up & learning the ropes, bar backing etc

 Thought I was negative.  Wouldn't that b.s. 2 week bar school be a part of learning the ropes?

im gonna do it over the summer to...just bartend occasionally if a good oportunity presents itself...

im already working 40+ hrs a week so i dont wanna do it full/part time

lol i juss typed a whole lot but wasnt logged in smh,, but im a bartender and didnt go to a school, you can get hired as a bar back and have on the job training and you will learn alot more.
i bar backed for 2 months and then became a bartender, at a hotel and right now its not that ez to get bartendin gigs in this field you really have to know someone to get a job

waste of money.

many people think that going to a bartending school will get you a bartending job: false.

these are the ways to become a bartender:

1. like previous comment, working your way up; bussing, bar backing, then slowly becoming a bartender
2. knowing the right people. GMs will always hire who they know and cause youre theyre boy or youre a hot girl, youll get a job and theyll teach you the basics.
3. becoming a simple bartender at a boston pizza or family restaurant then "applying".

NOT worth it. my father tended bar for 20 years. my boss right now has been a bartender for 20 years. i grew up around bartenders my whole life and have gotten advice from them, including one who HAD a bartending school. their verdict. don't go to school. get a job at a bar, either door guy, security, backing, and work your way up. I got lucky and got a barbacking job with one of my fathers good friends, so hopefully soon i'll be able to make the jump to bartender...

Thanks for the advice, it helped a lot. I was just considering going to the 2 week course as a start, I knew it wouldn't be enough to get me a bartending job. As for me, I was only looking into it to helped pay for graduate school. I'll be a teacher in a couple years, and I was thinking I could do this on the weekends and in the summer.

no one is uptight juss trying to save him a lil money why pay 400 dollars for something you can learn for free, when you go for a job they dont even ask if you been to a school or if you have a certificate

I just started bartending at the start of the year (friend of my dad owns it) i knew next to nothing about alcohol since I only drink once or twice a year, if at all. I just learnt everything on the job basically, it isn't too difficult if you have half a brain / social skills. Cool job, I enjoy it.

As far as employment, people will hire the guy with a bit of work experience or an outgoing personality before they hire someone who's only just out of a bartending course. I'd say it can't hurt to do a course, but for that price I'd be reluctant.

^nah i dont get done like that im more about speed and efficiency get to more customers =more money for me , but i can do flip around my shakers and other tools, but i juss do that when im not busy
