I don't do it. You should only be able to guard the ball by turning your shoulder or something. Why sticking out an arm for?
People need to be able to beat their man of the dribble fair & square.
And anytime someone is dribbling, they aren't necessarily trying to beat the defender off of the dribble. If I am initiating my offense and I have a pesky defender, I would like to keep him away. You do this by protecting the ball using the arm bar. If you turn your shoulder, you then become blind to that side of the court. I don't know of this "fair and square" you speak off.
