Basketball Thread About Nothing

I like the new Cavs jersey - just not a fan of the name under the numbers.

But this is fantastic.

Anyone ever done any officiating? Been thinking about it for a while and signed up for the local level 1 course which was today. Had a pretty good time and learned some practical stuff.

It was a killer though - 7.5 hours long and I could have taught it in 3 and spent more on the practical stuff - which was the best part. The worst part was there was a guy there who shouldn’t have been. He signed up to help out his kids team which is obviously admirable but he has now only seen one game of basketball and knew nothing. I was wanting to get practical tips on what to do in games and the minutiae of the rules - he needed a beginners guide. Seriously, at one point he said “dribbling is when you’re bouncing the ball right?” Every topic we were on meant explaining the basics to him.

Just ordered a spare whistle on Amazon, in the market for some plain black pants and shoes, and then the plan is just to jump in - no other way I can see to progress. They pair you up with an experienced ref at the beginning but apparently there are plenty of games at all levels. I’m thinking the local rec league and HS and I’ll take it from there.

Anyone got any tips?

There’s was a thread with a bunch of officials in it before. I did it for about 2.5 years in the nyc area. It was decent income and good exercise. But here it’s very political or built on nepotism. I was fine because I knew some of the assigners for numerous leagues from my playing days. While I was sort of an ******* on the court because I would talk to the officials in between fouls and stuff they all learned to like me and knew me. I did some Catholic HS basketball as well here and AAU.

The money is made in HS basketball or college. But the hours of the games makes it very inconvenient for people with a normal jobs and careers. I had to quit for that reason. I enjoyed it while I was doing it but some of the people I took the initial classes with struggled getting games assigned because they didn’t know people. Some assigners for certain leagues were shady too. They wanted a kickback essentially. That’s the dirty **** that pissed me off.
