Hey, my sister is turning 15 and has hinted at wanting to DJ and make beats. What is a good beginner set for a kid and what equipment is needed?

Make sure she learns about the basics... mixing, beat-matching, BPM's, etc...

i would normally agree with that but its tough nowadays...there's hardly any pure dj's - her starting off that way would kinda put her a disadvantage...
she's gonna eventually have to invest in some type of computer assistance and learn it anyways
its kinda like saying kids today should learn the to use the typewriter before Microsoft word to truly appreciate the art of writing - and this is coming from someone who learned on my fathers 20+ year old 1200s and dusty record collection before moving onto serato

It is a big investment which is why I suggested something a little less to see if she likes it, then make the transition.

yea i see where your coming from too....and purist would say serato "messed up" the game or whatever
but just like everything else its evolving and the younger generations will have it easier than the older

Get her some pioneer cdj's like the one tiesto & avb, etc use. It's all in the ear with those and no laptop need just play the CDs and listen to the bpm or a perfect blend.

I have no idea what that Torq Xponent is, but does it beat-match for you or something?
I can see both sides of the argument... and there's nothing wrong with the new technology I suppose, but ultimately with these new DJ's, if you give them a crate of wax, 2 decks and a mixer,will they be able to start mixing? If they can't, does it make them "less" of a DJ?
I heard a Z-Trip interview where he was, on one hand, praising these kids for doing their thing, while at the same time saying it was getting a bit too easy.
Not criticizing anyone, of course. Just opening this up for discussion.
Ultimately, I think having those skills make them a more complete DJ.

I think a controller would be good .Tables are a serious investment .IF you buying Tables you gotta be about your business as far as Djing .Tables are for the dedicated dudes who are career dj's.Your sis is 15 so a controller will free her up to buy serato,a laptop,ipod and a bunch of other stuff.If she gets good have her do gigs to get some tables.Trust me she doesn't want to lug around crates and what not all day and deal with some tables right now.She isn't about that life yet.

Take her to guitar center and have her test out Turntables, CDs and Controllers. Once she figures out what she likes, hit up craigslist and buy the stuff used. There's a bunch of beginner djs on craigslist (who failed at djing) selling their almost new equipment. If she buys new and she doesn't like it, she'll probably end up like one of those djs on craigslist and sell her equipment for half of what she bought it.
Tell her to start without a computer too. She wont create bad habits like staring at the screen or getting used to wave forms to beat match. Trust me, she'll gain much more respect this way. If you look on youtube, you'll see what Im taking about. Looks like the dj is about to jump into their computer screens.
