Reminds me of a Cracked article I read about "Supposedly Ancient Traditions (That Totally Aren't)":

#4.Islamic Fundamentalism

The Tradition:

The boogeyman that replaced the specter of communism in the hearts of terrified Westerners, Islamic fundamentalism seems to come from another time. They rage against science, Western ideals and the basic rights of women. That's why you hear people on Fox News claiming that Muslim world is stuck in the Dark Ages.

How Old It Actually Is:

Actually, the Middle East's clock stopped around the same time as the one at Marty McFly's high school in the 1950s. If the Arab world was really still stuck in the Middle Ages, everyone would be a lot better off.

Who Made It Up?

During the period the the Western world thinks of as the Dark Ages, when Europeans were busy murdering each other over matters of religion and superstition, Islam was cool as a cucumber. At the time, Islamic regions were actually more accepting of Judaism and Christianity than most of the Christian world was of Judaism and other types of Christianity. Long before the Italian Renaissance, the Islamic Empire realized the Greeks and Romans had been on to something with this book learning stuff, and used this realization to revolutionize astronomy, literature, physics, philosophy and architecture. Still bored, they went ahead and invented algebra and modern medicine too.

The antiquated practices many Westerners associate with modern Islam are actually a relatively recent development. Reporting from Saudi Arabia for The New Yorker, Lawrence Wright interviewed an older Saudi man who reminisced about the good old days when men and women used to be able to celebrate weddings together. While it might seem weird to Westerners used to hearing stories of ankle length hemlines following the words "Back in my day... ," in the Middle East, when grandparents miss the good old days, they're often talking about a place that was far less up its own $+*.

It wasn't until the 1950s that fundamentalist Islam started gaining influence, and outdated, dying traditions like the veil saw a spike in popularity. That's when followers of a fringe 18th century scholar Mohammed Al Wahab began to take Islam back to basics, which in this case meant an imaginary past where women were treated like %#!$ and all the pesky "progress" of the last 1400 years never happened. During his lifetime, Wahab was taken about as seriously as Pat Robertson is taken today in the West. But in the 1950s, Wahabi Muslim thinkers like Sayyid Qutb started to urge total separation between Islam and the West, arguing that the outside world had "nothing else to give humanity."

Qutb and his fundamentalist contemporaries inspired a new generation of radical thinkers, who took this "%%!@ the West" mentality a few steps further, resulting in a Middle East that is far less progressive than the Dark Ages they're supposedly stuck in.

See, as tempting as it might be to divide history into the bad guys and the good guys, civilizations tend to evolve more like the Batman franchise, kicking $+* part of the time, and reaching unspeakable, $+* backwards lows that would embarrass their ancestors at others. Muslim people were doing algebra while we were burning women for having funny birthmarks on their face. They just happen to be going through their Batman and Robin phase.

Bill Maher is religiously anti-religion, so without watching it I can already guess that once again, most of the world's problems can be solved by "being reasonable" and not having any sort of spirituality or belief system other than the one he has decided is best (atheism).

Dude is really starting to sound like a broken record on his show...

Islam is a religion of peace. I am a Muslim. Just like many other cases the extreme group of individuals do stupid things that make people think the majority acts like that as well.

Every religion has its crazies. The CIA and Mossad has killed more Americans than Islam has, that is all...

extremists are in all religions.

he's right about what he said tho (at least with the extremists), and you can apply it to basically every religion with a few tweaks here and there.

glad i dont believe or follow in any religion/gods.

Why is Bill Maher considered an expert?

Not only is he not Muslim, but he isn't even an Orientalist.

He has no formal education of the religion. He has never written anything scholarly on any subject, let alone Islam.

So why are we asking him?

Exactly.  Also, he says he has never personally read the Quran, yet he proceeds to (falsely) speak of the books teaching's.

Islam is going through what the West went through in the Dark Age?....Islam brought the "West" out of the "Dark Age".

I used to rock with Bill Maher but i'm starting to see the attentionwhore in him growing out of control.

Stupid comments abound in that clip.

*I'm not Muslim.

That isn't fair. As stated several times before in this topic, violent extremists are borne out of any feverish, desperate desire to preserve or maintain the integrity of belief. Some will go beyond the point of sanity to do this, but those who do are the minority, not the majority.

He's right as far as what he said about Islamic culture in the East, especially when it comes down to how it's portrayed (and that's before the whole terrorist association started).

But he aint correct about Muslims in general since they're all not like that but for the most part he's talking about Islamic countries.

I know plenty of Muslims, I mean 40 or so. None of them are the way TELEVISION portrays them to be. Bush was a Christian extremist. As is Netanyahu being a Jewish extremist. But because oil sits under the people of Islam, the media attacks deliberately. Knowing good Muslim people myself, it sucks to see what they go thru. It's unfair. Bill Maher is an idiot

So the interview starts with a ridiculous question.  I was under the impression that out of all the religions currently established, Islam is under the most scrutiny and the most criticism.

"They are violent. They are threatening. They bring that desert stuff."

Seriously? Statistically MUCH more Americans believe civilian casualties are acceptable under extreme conditions than Muslims do.

"We are a society of civilized people."

Again I ask. Why is this guy taken as an expert? I mean do I really need to explain how ridiculously prejudice these comments are?

Many passages that are not peaceful at all? All of the passages discussing violence in Islam are in the context of defense. Refusal to acknowledge these basic facts shows his lack of education.

Than he says there are more passages in the Qur'an about violence than there is in the Bible. This is also false, studies comparing the two books have shown there is more overall verses discussing violence in the Bible than the Qur'an.

To understand the international terrorism stemming from the Middle East, one must understand the political and social history of the region.

The video spoke the truth Mo Matik. Also, checking Highergrounds history of posts, this is the first time he's spoken negative about Islam.

You know we usually agree on %%+$, but the majority of the the states in the Middle East are goverened by Islamic law some of it the most fundamental of sorts.  That doesn't mean Islam the religion itself, but the application of religion within society.  I don't know how you could really disagree with that.

I agree Maher made some stupid comments in that video like failing to address the right wing tea party ##$!#%%@ which largely is based upon a form of bibilical literalism that while not on the same plain, has many similarities to fundmentalist Islam.  No matter your hate for the western world haze, there is no denying that Middle Eastern societies have not developed mainly due to the adherence to religion.  And many of them have gotten worse over the past century as this fundamentalism has grown.  It's not all middle eastern countries either, Turkey in the 20th century became the first of the bunch to create a state that seperate itself from religion.  But as a whole its hard to ignore.  Our country's actions haven't been helpful in easing these countries out of this "dark age" either as we are partiall responsible for it as well.

The Muslims we see everyday that dress according to fashion, watch TV like normal folk, and generally assimilate to American culture are hardly practicing muslims. I know that its impossible to live 100% according to the Quran, but the average American Muslim hardly brushes the surface when it comes to doing whats obligatory in Islam. Hell, a great percentage of Muslims I knew skimped on specific Halal food guidelines, and prayed once a week/month/year, as opposed to the 5 times a day---Once again that is the most basic and straightforward of the  components of Islam. Then when you factor in the customs that conflict with american culture, lowering of gaze, talking to opposite sex, entertainment, proper dress (all obligatory, not preferred)...you see that these "good muslims" are far from practicing muslims

Yall know he's a comedian right?

yall see anderson's face tryna not luahg about the piece over here piece over there joke?

The fundamentals, like you said, are practiced by many Muslims living in the West. Given that, a lot of Muslims also don't practice the fundamentals either.

Individual conflicts are different. Lowering of gaze, proper dress, etc. are issues that require discussion in detail and each separately.

To put it simply though, many of these rules people find in conflict with Western society exist for the sake of discouragement; that is, they exist without any threats of serious repercussions.

I didn't hear the second part of the analogy about the Inquisition and religion having too much power, until I watched the clip again. I can partly agree with that but to each his own. Africa and South East Asia have Billions more Muslims than the Middle East and Islam is practiced through different cultural lens in those places. Even within the Middle East, there are endless variations of Islamic culture based on location.
