Older brother I used to work with back in an older job put me on. He bought a new whip but never drove it to work. He pushed his old Mitsubishi mirage instead. I only found out cuz me and him got to talking and I told him how my pops had a Mitsubishi mirage and learned to drive a manual with it
Years later after I had left that job and switched companies I did the same thing after buying a new car. Kept pushing my beater Toyota to work and on dates. On the weekends when I was running errands I would alternate what car I drove and it was eye opening how people would treat me based on what car I drove. Made me realize people are dumb and shallow
I never judged people on material things cuz I came from the bottom

I've always had higher paying jobs post college, so I never ran into concerns about co-workers hating on my car if I drove in. I'm also in the DC area so it ain't crazy to see young Black men with nice things.

I'll be DAMNED if I let some racist fool question my integrity based on the car I am bringing to work. Not being modest to make them feel better about themselves. That's THEIR issue, not mine.
I got a job as an Army contractor at Ft. Belvoir in 2011.
I drove a 2000 Mercedes E430.
In 2013 I bought a 2010 Mercedes E550 4matic.
Kept both cars.
One day I decided to drive the 2010 but parked two parking lots over from my building.
One of my coworkers saw me from the building (nosey Indian dude) and asked why I parked so far away.
Not less than two weeks later I got into a confrontation with one of the government supervisors based on his tone and asked him if he wanted to step outside to continue the conversation.
The next thing I knew I was called into a meeting surrounded by my supervisor, his supervisor, and the program manager.
3 white men.
One of them was getting animated and the calmer I was the more angry he got.
He was so irate his face turned red when I asked him if he needed to step out, take a break, and calm down.
The contracting company tried to put me on a "performance improvement plan".
One example of the BS they listed:
"We noticed you eating breakfast and lunch at your desk and washing your dishes in the office sink. We don't believe you should be using the office sink or taking time out of your workday to wash your dishes when you can take them home."
Mind you - I'd been doing the same thing since the first day I was hired.
Every one of my reviews up until that point was stellar, and I received a raise every year. Even got a promotion and a spot bonus for my work.
After the meeting, they handed me a document and I returned to my desk...but the head of the department and I were cool so I asked if I could speak with him and he said he didn't want to get involved.
The only reason I wanted to speak to him was to ask if quitting that day would have a negative impact on our mission milestones.
Since he didn't want to get involved I typed up my two-week notice and sent it to my chain of command.
Two minutes later he was at my desk asking if I was sure I wanted to leave and if there was anything he could do.
I worked my last two weeks with no other issues and they even had the nerve to throw me a party on my last day with cake and ice cream.
One of my coworkers asked me where I was going.
"Elsewhere."
Didn't have another job lined up but had two side hustles plus I saved more than I spent so I knew I would be fine.
Evidently "they" thought that I would be so desperate to stay because of the car that they could show their true colors and make my life a living hell.
I can't speak for civilian environments but in Government work, this is definitely a thing.
Northern racism = we don't care what you own, as long as you don't come around here.
Southern racism = we don't care if you come around here, as long as you don't own anything.

I'm confused. You were a govt contractor, got into a confrontation with your FTE supervisor (telling him to step outside), and your contracting company put in motion a plan to fire you because of that.

Houston is only a black city on paper. In the city itself, it is majority black but thats because everyone actually lives in the Katys, Sugarlands, Pearlands ect.

Metro areas are included IMO. Atlanta been overrated for a looooooong time. Folks finally realizing it.
The OGs (Oakland, Detroit, Chicago, DC, Memphis) still a factor too.
Houston you’re getting farrrrrr better value for your buck. DC was called “chocolate city” for a reason. I like VA too

Alotta folks just moved whatever they was doing from ATL to Houston…Just following the same cycle, couple more years ppl gonna be saying Houston “fell off” too…You can already feel n see it in the nightlife n prices compared to the pandemic n right after it
Interesting fact is DC had the highest population growth the last year…I’m sure a lot of em are the gentrifiers but still surprising to see given how the media says ppl are only moving to states like Texas and Florida and away from areas like DC

DC is still Black, but it ain’t “black-BLACK” like the chocolate city you came up in/we remember.
Baltimore, really is the black city on the rise. And I’m not just saying that.
A Young Black mayor (in a state with a Black Governor) who has significantly cut down the crime rate.
Increase in population for the first time in decades.
Investments into the city and culture (you gotta come check out the Baltimore peninsula). Under Armour got them booming. Slutty vegan just opened up, alongside other black owned businesses.
Increased national presence. Due to social media, people now have a perception and know what to expect from people from Baltimore. 10 years ago, most people had no idea what the average Baltimore citizen looked/sounded like. Thanks to spots, culture, entertainment, media etc….things have changed. And it’s centered around Black culture. Not “the Huns” and “natty Bo’s/hairspray” etc…..but now shown the other side of baltimore (black Baltimore on a national stage) Even the ravens are a black team. National profile, Black MVP QB. That’s why I love when *****s like Derek Queen or an Angel Reese unapologetically put on. Raise the national profile. Show them how we really carry it. Even if they putting gas on it
I really feel like I moved back home, at the right time. ***** feels “different” these days. Actually some hope
And it’s people in our age brackets that are us, look like us, know us that are making moves.
Also interesting that Carnival has pretty much been moved from DC to Baltimore now in the summer. More people traveling HERE for black events. And the cities are “closer” now, than before. It really is nothing to get to DC and back. I do it all the time. Could not have imagined this 10 years ago.

Yeah I like D.C. on visits especially in the summer time. Since I live in Richmond it's not even that far of a commute. Me and the guys might get a ABNB and telly, set out locations to U street or DuPoint Circle on the dating apps a week out and already have moves lined up by the time we get there.
I couldn't live in D.C. though, too much going on. We just go there to party.

Yea the cost of living is the killer… But DC definitely the main hub for black nightlife and events on the east coast till you hit GA…You don’t have to leave here to get the same vibes n joints as H Town or ATL

IDK bruh, Houston damn near bullet proof. My cousins moved to Texas in 1995. I’ve been going there since 1997. My cousin graduated from TSU in 2005. I went to the campus barber and that was the first time a **** hit my line with a straight razor. I fell in love! I won’t even mention the women….
But there’s toooooo much money in Texas. Especially with the oil, livestock, engineering industry, etc. too many natural resources in that state for anyone to not thrive.
Lastly, there’s so much land. My cousin purchased a house in 2010 for 250k. Two stories, theatre, etc. She’s renting it out as of 2023 and they have another home in San Antonio.
Again, there’s just toooo much money in Houston IMO
