Buying a Apple Question?

I'm A college grad, I only use my computer for Internet surfing, and music download...

Currently on PC but switching to MAC...would I be stupid to buy a ibook 3g for $180, dude in my building is sellin it.

Used MacBooks are goin for about $550, Is MacBook worth it for basic surfing or would i be okay in ibook?

Either way I'm sure the ibook is a huge upgrade from the Dell Inspirion that I've had for 4years! LOL

Also...

Do I have to have a Apple external hard drive or the one i'm using w/ my PC will suffice?

Test the ibook first to get an idea. We won't know how it's going to perform. As for the external, the one you use now should suffice. Check on the type of HD first before you buy a new one. I don't know about Macs but PCs won't be able to recognize an Apple HD unless if its format has been changed to the appropriate one.

 Power PC processors are outdated. You won't be stupid if you buy it for $180, you'll be ignorant for buying a 8yr old laptop. WTH....dude even if you just do internet surfing and download music, applications for today and the future will not be compatible  with an ibook power pc. Just remembered power speeds are in the mhz speed, we have Smartphone with faster processors like the Evo at 1ghz dude my cell phone is faster than your ibook computer.

I use a computer just like OP and was ready to convert to a Mac (the iphone got me).  However, for the price, I couldn't pull the trigger because there are so many comparable options for much less.  The way technology is advancing so quickly, I'd rather save money now and put it towards another computer.
