What if a college football player decides not to enter the NFL Draft? Can that player enter free agency sometime after the draft instead and sign to the team of their choosing? Would there be a cap on how much that player can sign for?

For example, Dez Bryant and Golden Tate. Both had a considerable amount of hype. Of course they tossed their names in the draft, but is it possible that they could have just waited, entered free agency somewhere down the line and signed with who they wanted maybe for less money?

I'm also interested to know this, but I figure there must be a rule that stipulates you have to enter through the draft until a certain age?

I've always wondered this also.

Like what if an owner had a son who was a top 10 talent but wanted to skip the draft and sign with his pops team for the minimum to help with the cap.

I think it's possible...but you never go with the option that brings in less money and poses more of a risk. Especially in the NFL.

This is DEFINITELY not allowed.

I'm pretty sure you have to enter the draft before entering the league for both NFL and NBA. And if you don't get drafted, THEN you can sign on whatever team wants you.

Otherwise, players would just go to the teams they really want to play for, and that wouldn't make sense at all.

OK thanks guys. Sucks for someone trying to stay close to home. I guess you can kill your draft stock. Is it possible to just work out for select teams? Is there a penalty besides dropping in the draft?

Isn't Harvey Unga going to enter this?
Because i believe he was dropping out of school for violating a honor code or something

Yeah I heard that too

I could've sworn there was something about the Ravens "urging" Jared Gaither to enter the supplemental draft.
But they only bidded a fifth so maybe I'm mistaken. His was a special case anyway.
