Can somebody PLEASE explain the Google Chromecast, and Roku, ect to me? PLEASE

So I think I may have gotten the wrong idea from the Chromecast.  I had thought that it would let me wirelessly stream anything that is on my computer to my TV.  I think I may have been wrong, but can somebody please clarify?  Also, is there a device that would let me do what I'm looking for?

Chromecast enables you to stream content from the chrome browser. Anything that is playable within the browser can be casted.

Things like NFL Sunday ticket, webpages, internet video (including porn), local video files can be casted wireless to your TV. Your entire computer desktop can also be casted. However, this is in beta form and will not send sound to your TV.

Chromecast also supports native apps like Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, HBO Go, and Youtube from your tablet or phone that can be casted to you TV.

I have one now and it plays with sound.

never tried Sunday Ticket or pron

but I'm sure it'll work.

I stream games and movies with sound.
 
Maybe they fixed the desktop streaming stuff :lol: I haven't tried since launch and at that time there was no sound as it was still in beta.

Obviously, streaming anything from within the Chrome browser will pass sound to your TV.

Ok thats cool, so basically if I'm watching a VLC movie on my desktop I can cast that to my TV?  Or streaming a sporting event using Chrome?  ect?

Right now, it's a very cheap way to play Netflix, Youtube, HBO Go (as of today I believe) and Google Play services. If you have a Smart TV, PS3, Roku, Apple TV, etc. they it's not essential as those devices can already do the same thing.

As for OP, you might look into a Roku and using Plex on it. Plex allows you to easily stream any video from your computer to your Roku and connected TV. Plex also exists for PS3, there's an Apple TV workaround that my brother uses well, and there's supposed to be Plex for Chromecast coming soon which should be awesome. Roku's also have Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc. as well.

The apps are SO hard to connect... YouTube BARELY works ... Google play music DOES NOT WORk...

I thought it would be somewhat as responsive as mirror displays... But its not even close.

With the mirror displays... You can surf the web, text, as well as everything with chromecast... Its also a cheaper alternative...
 
I'm going off experience as well. Youtube has been flawless. I've had a few issues where Play Music won't always go to the next song so I have to hit play again from my phone (but it worked well on my computer). Netflix works great too.

I'm sure they'll work to fix some of the bugs and once Plex support comes I'll really love it.
 
As BigJ said Plex is still the best way to go to stream your local content. If you're looking to cast your local content without ANY framerate drop or looking to stream your games to your TV your best bet is to do it through an HDMI cable. There is no current wireless solution available that will allow the 1:1 cast.


In regards to Fontaine.

Every app works flawless for me (I'm using my PC and an iPhone). Desktop cast has about 1 second lag max for me.

For $35, Chromecast is great. I can stream Youtube from my phone and computer, and anything else I'm playing in the browser. To me, that's worth $35.
 
Fully loaded g box midnight is the way to go.. Streams anything full 1080p is available.. And when I say anything I mean cut the cord anything
 
my only issue is the laggy response when i cast a tab so i barely use it for that reason.
 
To me chromecast is useless if you have a moderen day cell phone. I can stream all my content and video from apps straight to my tv or do it via hdmi cord. I dont see the point of chromecast but o well

You can use Chromecast using your cell phone. I have a Galaxy SIII and use the Chrome browser on it, so when I use my Chromecast I use my phone.


I've heard this complaint a lot, which is valid, but people need to be patient with Chromecast. I find it hard to believe that Google created this thing to be this limited.

Google had plans for more apps with companies its just still in its beginning stages

. Google does this to with product to see if it will fly or not like the Google tv. Google is doing  nothing to back this up enough for the product to grow. The Cromecast was thought to do so much with apps by this time for only $35.

I think you got a bad one and should contact google for a new one
 
I'm thinking of picking up a Vizio Smart Tv. I'm guessing that would be a better buy than Chromecast or will Chromecast have more features?
 
You'll also likely pay extra for a Smart TV than you would for a comparable set without internet access... even if you factor in the cost of Chromecast. Of course, most people have some form of streaming to their TV, so the Chromecast could still be "useless". As a secondary device for a bedroom it's a good choice.

I bought mine because I wanted to save my PS3 from having to stream countless hours of Netflix. $35 dollars is a fair price to me... plus if/when it gets Plex then it'll be really great.
 
picked up chromecast a few months back.. main reason i copped was to stream NFL sunday ticket from my phone to my tv. never figured out how to do it, since my Note2 doesnt support flash.. 

really dont see the point of it.. especially if you have a smart tv that has youtube, pandora and other apps already installed..
 
i have apple tv, roku and a ps3..

i do the same ish on all of em, except ps3 doesnt have hbo go..

i hate the roku, with a passion.

its like our adopted kid and my girl always protects it because she watches her trash like revenge and once upon a time.

the ps3 media server app is laggy as hell too, i just transfer movies to a usb drive and pray they arent cinevia protected.

Yeah you have to stream Sunday Ticket from a laptop or desktop computer to your Chromecast. I was an early adopter for LCD and LED TV's so I don't have a smart TV. To turn my non smart TV's into smart TV's for 35 bucks I felt was a good deal.

I also feel that the browsing/searching interface on my iPhone is much easier to navigate than the various game consoles and smart TV's.
