One of my good friends just started a website to buy & sell car used parts. Auction style, similar to E-Bay. This is his first forray into the internetbusiness forum

What do you guys think? Do you see any potential in the market for a place like this?

Sites legit. I think there is definitely a market for this. But its the kind of website that would be successful only if there are a lot of people constantlybuying and selling (like ebay). I always thought ebay's business model was smart (minimal expenses, don't have to carry inventory, not having to dealwith shipping,and just acting like a middle man). It's also good to see there is multiple revenue streams too aside from listing fees ( like banner ads).My only advice is to create a sense of community since I assume his main competitors are those car forums (e.g. VWvortex.com) that already offer a marketplacefor niche markets.

A few questions though:

How long did it take before the site was actually launched? How did he get funding(Angels? Loans?) for the business? Does he have an office with employees? Oris he running it out of his garage or something?

And good luck with his business. I'll check back often to see how his business is doing.

hmmm site seems dope i actually gots some part i dont need might be useful...

the only thing i recommend is when selecting the make and model maybe have it filter out all the models that dont believe to that make...

i know its easy said then done but just a suggestion.

KH - to answer your questions: From the business idea to the site launch it was a fairly quick turnaround, around 5 or 6 months. The original funding waspersonal funds, actually in the last 2 weeks they secured their first investor. The overhead is minimal (it's being run out of their house) at the moment.They're paying a few college kids a few dollars each to get email addresses of management of prospective auto businesses (car dealerships, mechanics, etc)in state (IL) and are starting to get an out of state list populated as well. They have a few area car dealers on board already. From the early returns, alotof the bigger possible clients want to see more Registered Users before they get on board but they like the idea alot.
