Why is that my steering wheel shakes a little as i press on the brakes while driving?

my wifes car started to get the shakes after around 30K miles, but i really put a lot of wear on the brakes. I'm talking multiple trips to Vegas in the dead of summer jamming 90-95MPH down that hill as you head into stateline from CA to NV and then jammin on the breaks as I come up on the traffic pack.
I had em grind the rotors and it fixed the problem.
