Cedric Benson's career with the Bears has been less than smooth, and his Saturday arrest likely won't enhance his stature in the eyes of the organization.
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/930760,CST-SPT-bearnt04.article Benson has been arrested before and was found guilty of breaking into a woman's home in search of a stolen television in 2004. He also was arrested on a marijuana charge.

"I was not intoxicated," Benson told the Chicago Sun-Times. "There was alcohol on the boat and others were enjoying themselves, but I wasn't drunk."

"They gave me a field sobriety test, told me to say my ABCs and told me to count from 1 to 4 up and down," Benson told the Chicago Tribune. "I'm thinking, I passed all the tests, did everything right. Then the officer told me we needed to go to land to take more tests. I politely asked him why we needed to go to land to take more tests when I took every test. Then he sprayed me with mace, on his boat.

"I'm not handcuffed. I'm not under arrest. I'm not threatening him. I'm not pushing him. I'm not touching him. And he sprays me right in my eye."

Benson was released from jail early Sunday on a $14,500 bond. He said in the year he has owned the boat, he has been questioned by lake police six times, according to the Tribune.

Benson was operating the boat with 15 passengers aboard when he was stopped by a Lower Colorado River Authority officer for a random safety inspection. He failed a field sobriety test on the officer's boat and was uncooperative when the officer tried to take him ashore, the authority said.

"When Benson did not pass the test, he presented himself as a threat to the officer and argued about whether or not he would be taken to land to have a follow-up field sobriety test performed on land and refused to put on a life jacket," the authority said in a statement. The officer had to use pepper spray to subdue Benson, a move the running back doesn't understand.

"Even after they pepper-sprayed me, I have no idea why they did that. I was cooperative," Benson told the Sun-Times. "I asked them several times why they did that and they didn't give me an answer."

Benson then refused to leave the officer's boat and authorities had to drag him to a car to be taken to the Travis County jail, the authority said.

Benson's account differs. He told the Tribune that he was not near his family when the police restrained him.

"Nobody saw what he did to me," Benson told the newspaper. "I started screaming for my mother to come. That's when they put me under arrest. And the officer threw a life jacket over my head.

"Once we got to land, the Travis County police grabbed me and kicked my feet from under me. So I landed on my back while I was handcuffed. They held me down and held the water hose over my face. I couldn't breathe, I'm choking, I'm begging the cops, 'Please stop. Please stop.' Then they picked me up and dragged me backward toward their car. And I'm still being polite, asking them, 'Sir, could you please allow me to walk like a man to your cop car?' They just kept dragging me on."

He is still in the NFL?

I dont understand how he got drafted as high as he did. He has no talent and he never did. He is like Shaun Alexander without Steve Hutchinson and WalterJones

Does anyone know what his 40 time is? I know he wouldnt runit for anyone probably because its in the 5.6....I mean 4.6 range.

Another one of those mysterious power/finess backs

He produced at Texas just like any running back they have ever had but he never stood out. IMO, He got the hype he did because he followed RickyWilliams. And from what I remember of him he looked somewhat quicker at Texas. But dude as always been a stumbler like Shaun Alexander. I dunno I was justnever that enamored with him. I am not gonna sit here and say I thought he would be a complete bust. But when I saw him go as high as Ronnie Brown I wassuprised.

he was good at Texas cuz our O-line was amazing those years. Same thing happened with Jamaal Charles. During his freshman year the o-line was stacked...thisyear not so much so he didn't look as good

I remember wanting my Vikings to get this dude....not anymore. He hasn't panned out like most people thought he would. He also had that contract issue whenhe arrived in the league. Hopefully he can clean himself up because he has/had a lot of potential.

Part of his hype at Texas came from his HS career. He was a beast in HS. If I remember right, he had close to 8500 yards rushing, his team won 3 straighttitles, and he had quite a few 300+ yard games. I lived in Abilene at the time, and the hype was tremendous. Back then, they were acting like Ricky wasn'tgoing to be anything but a preview to what Ced was bringing.

I probably saw him play 5 or 6 times a year back then, and he made those other high schoolers look like toddlers. I realize that most top talents do that, butthis was pretty extreme. I'm not saying the hype was deserved, but I also saw Vince play quite a few times in HS, and Cedric looked more impressive.

Back then, he even looked fast. The first time I saw him walk into a pile and fall down at Texas, I was shocked, I couldn't figure out where all that speedwent.

Exactly. He has always been a stumbler ever since he was at Texas. Which is why I am shocked that he was drafted 4th

You know he only got 3.4 yards away from the police.

Wow and I wanted the Raiders to draft him.

He's done no favors tomay fanasy team either. Drunk boating won't cause him to miss time but this year is his last chance.

Yeah he was, I saw him play once in H.S., but he was being talked about everywhere. Even on the cover of Texas Football Magazine, which is a big deal inTexas.

i hate to say it, but my boy should have hung up the helmet and cleats, and stuck with the bat and glove.
