I've been searching for some summer internships in NYC and back home in Southern Cali. I already have a finance one in Manhattan that pays about $17 anhour. I heard that NYC rents are through the roof, and I'm just scared that the rent would basically cancel out what I earn. What area in NYC has thecheapest apartments? It doesn't have to be in Manhattan, although it would be nice. I don't really mind how small the apartment is or how"hood" the area is, but I might change my mind as I've never really lived in an urban area before.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

it's not cheap if you get robbed everyday

wages in NYC reflect the cost of living. i.e. earning 50k in NYC is like earning 30k in Wisconsin (roughly)

If you want to live in the city, then check out Chinatown, or Inwood.

I have heard of people paying $50 a month

Bronx is your best bet.

You can find a decent area, cheapest rent in NYC and close to Manhattan.

Thanks for the help. I'll check out some of those areas with some friends when I go for spring break. Yea, I'll probably be living with afew friends, but out of curiosity, why do I "need" a roommate?

Don't know where ur internship is (assuming its somewhere either downtown or midtown), but a lot of ppl i kno who get finance internships in collegeapply for NYU housing...good environment, safe, downtown, tons of things to do and ppl to meet, not as expensive or as hard as a short term apartment (since uronly there for the summer)...i'd definetly reccommend looking into that...it's not guaranteed to non-NYU kids, so you should look into it as soon aspossible...

Also, again, don't know what ur finance internship is, but I wouldn't reccomend Queens, especially if ur not from NY. At these banking/financeinternships u might be working 12+ hour days, so while it may be cheaper, u don't wanna be wasting ur time commuting...

EDIT: ^u don't "need" a roomate, but like it's been said, this is an expensive city to live in...its also an easier place to live in if ulive with ppl u know, especially if ur from out of town

Why does everyone #!#% on Queens about this? Except for the very far parts leading in to Long Island, mostly everywhere in Queens is accesible by train.

Thanks, fam. I looked into NYU/Columbia/etc. but they're all like $3,000+ per person for the summer.

Just wondering, how bad are Queensbridge and Marcy?

you need a roomate because studios are hardly ever under 850 when you could get a 3 bedroom apt for 1300-1500 so your rent could end up being 400-500 a month

i live in woodhaven right now (with my mom lulz) in a 3 bedroom apt in woodhaven.... 1300/month. the only problem is that it takes an hour by train to geteverywhere. i suppose you have to pay for convenience.

WOW thats nice....

How is the woodhaven area? My mom wants a bigger place

A nice cardboard box will do nicely, it'll have more room than a studio apartment at least.
