This is true for some classes, but me personally, for math or chemistry I HAVE TO BE THERE

Lectures alone are just incredibly boring, and just put me to sleep i stopped going to mine cause he didn't take attendance. I need some kind of interaction.

   This is true, if the Professor is particularly engaging I feel compelled to go. But my main concern is wasted time like you pointed out. I just wanna skip the middle man so to speak...if I don't understand something I have multiple sources I could read until I get it. Worse comes to worst, I could go to office hours.

   This is true, if the Professor is particularly engaging I feel compelled to go. But my main concern is wasted time like you pointed out. I just wanna skip the middle man so to speak...if I don't understand something I have multiple sources I could read until I get it. Worse comes to worst, I could go to office hours.

I find many of my lectures to be profound and enticing.

It depends on the professor and his/her level of proficiency.

I, for one, am an interactive learner, but I find no problem with sitting in lecture and taking some brief notes when needed. Not saying I enjoy it, though. For the most part I just sit there and soak in the information first, highlighting critical notes, then recollect later. I hate taking notes, btw.

At many higher ed places at the graduate or medical level, there's a lecture notes service/system
personally though...I prefer going to lectures... just another avenue for exposure to the material.  Instead of just reading, I got to hear the information and with more visual aids from the faculty..  I retain info better that way.

for some learners though...lecture is useless...esp when the faculty are terrible teachers. Their real reason for being there is their research and they're only teaching b/c they have to

truth be told the only reason i even show up to the lectures is to talk to females

most of classes post their lecture powerpoints online and dont have mandatory attendance. Hell their entire lecture is just reading off the pp slides anyway, i can do that %%+% myself

   Tell me about it....I don't want to spend 3 hrs listening to a Professor rant about his recent research project. Many Professors don't get paid to teach, their value is the research they do and the grant funds they attract.

self-directed learning is the ultimate aim of education IMO... problem is that it takes us to experience the traditional "education" system to know how valuable self-directed learning can be.
