Like honestly just over the year with so many different coaches getting fired... I always wonder what the hell makes a coach a great coach one year but thenext year he gets fired... Like how is this on the coach? what made him get coach of the year one year and now is jobless?? Is it just management findingsomeone to blame other than the players??

Im not sure overrated is the right word but honestly I just don't know how you can be coaching for 10 years and then have a few down years and all of asudden youre not a good coach... Doc Rivers is an example, Lawrence Frank ( when he came in they won like 10 straight games and was the reason for the turnaround) so is he a bad coach now??

Thoughts?

it depends on the sports imo. in a sport like baseball or football where playcalling or matchups and lineups can really determine the game i think a good coachor manager can do alot to improve your team.

in basketball an elite coach like a phil jackson or someone of that nature can make a difference but for the most part basketball you can get by off of skilland athletism and an average coach.

I will always think this except in football. To me, baseball managers are the most overrated.

i would think baseball would be the most important where a coach or manager would be needed.

theres a few baseball games off the top of my head where i think the end result could be blamed on the manager for the team losing and where the managers smartdecision making helped the team win.

football is pretty important too, clock management and comming up with good playcalling.

So what made someone like a Joe Torre so great for all those years in New York? Why did they decide to fire him... he just lost the skill of managing games ina years span?

look at the yankee ownership and the history they have with managers. joe torre was winning 90+ games year in year out with the yankees and doing a good jobwith the team yet while the yankees have expecatations that every sports team should have, they are unrealistic in the sense that they expect you to win thetitle every year.

it's so much that a manager needs to do throughout the game for his team, knowing who to have pitch in each game, knowing how to alter their lineup sothat the matchups favor them, knowing who and when to have someone pinch hit, knowing when to and when to not go their bullpen, etc

so what im saying how did him knowing who to pitch and things like that change within a year... for ages he knew how to do all of that and won a few worldseries.... all of a sudden one year he just cant make the right changes?? and if thats the case how did LA get so far with him

I was about to make a topic about this the other day when I seen Childress get an extension. Like hes been on the hot seat for a while now and a lot of peoplethought he should get fired but now that the Vikings start doing good he gets an extension?? The same thing happened to Coughlin with the Giants.

Exactly Childress was getting tons of heat... but now that hes winning with Percy, Favre and AP.... hes getting an extension...

I totally can't find the source for this, but I remember reading a pretty interesting article arguing that different NBA basketball coaches have verylittle effect on their team. That is, replacing one coach with another ultimate ends up making very little difference.

However, not having a coach at all would be disastrous. After all, the average NBA game is won by about 4 points. Imagine not having a coach to determine whento call timeouts, to make in-game adjustments, to handle the rotation, to draw up good plays after a timeout.... A coach can easily affect the game by at least4 points. So having a coach (vs. not having a coach) can make a big difference on whether you win or lose the game (since the margin really is so tight betweenwinning and losing, on average).

So the overall point was that HAVING a competent coach makes a big difference, but when you get to the NBA level, WHICH coach you have doesn't actuallymake that much of a difference. (Assuming that if you were good enough to be hired in the NBA as a head coach, you have to know at least something about thegame.)

it didnt change....other teams got better, had players , were hot, etc. plus the yankees didnt have the great starters and players that did the little things..this year they had players like gardner who specialized in certain aspects and te pitching was awesome.
