College Students

Need your opinions. Is it worth going to a out of state college? The fact that im going to be living on my own as well i know its going to be difficult but worth it at the end.
Any opinions or recomendations?

Heading to Santa Monica College then transfer program to UCLA by the way. Automotive Engineering Major

Its worth it if the school is better than some of the in-state schools and you can afford out of state tuition.

I did it, 14 hours away from home, and loved every minute of it. If you feel that the school will benefit you the most, do it. One recommendation is to knock out your general education courses before you do that, if you haven't already done some of that in high school.

OP - hope your money pockets (or your parents' bank account) is deep, or I hope you dont mind taking public transportation and living an hour away from campus.

That part of town is NOT cheap. I used to rent a 1bd/1ba apt about 2-3 miles from UCLA and maybe 2-3 miles from Santa Monica College (lived pretty much right in between the two) and it was running me about 1350+/mo not including utilities, cable, etc... etc... By no means was my apt a luxury digs kinda place, it was a very standard for the area apt. If you living in a nicer newer building, it can easily run you $1,500-2,000) for a 1bd. If you lookin a bit slummier, you might be able to find a 1bd for around $1,000. It will be extremely difficult finding anything less than $1,000 a month no matter how crappy you go. If you dont mind the cramped space, you might be able to find some 400 sq ft bachelor with no kitchen and a hotplate for under a G.

Santa Monica is pretty baller status on the rent............ unless youve been living in the are for 10+ years.

And like Mojod said.... you RARELY get enough for what you pay for. Right now I stay in Down Town LA (hood area) and it's still not cheap.

The only thing good about SMC is the abundance of fly Asian chicks and the super clean campus other than that it's just a school. I would just try to work something out with your local CC and try to transfer as many units to the system here. Save some dough and still go to your precious UCLA

I'm going to school 3000 miles away from home and the California sunshine. IMO, it's good to get out of your comfort zone and experience the world without depending on your parents (not that you can't be independent while being in-state).

I'm doing the same. Transferring to UCLA that is. But I'm going to El Camino instead, its closer to me. I'd def not recommend out of state to anyone unless you or parents have bank though. Tuition is going to KILL you unless:

1) You have scholarships
2) You have someone paying
3) I can't think of anything else

I personally would never do it. We have some of the best universities in the world here in California. USC, UCLA, UCB. And as for your major, I've never heard of it lol
Majoring in Mechanical Engineering btw. So we're kinda on the same boat
